King of Fools Lyrics

I worry that I can't give you what you need
That you'll find nothing underneath the peel
That I can't undo the times we disagreed
That I can't ignore the way I feel

Cos what I feel is the only truth I know
And I get by on this naivete of youth

If what I feel is the only truth
And what I give out will make up what I'll receive
Can I leave behind my naivete of youth?
Will I be crucified for wanting to believe?
I believe

Could you hold us up if I would drag us down?
Resurrect emotions from our past
N' if they had a king for fools would you wear the crown?
Build us up again and make us last

Cos what I feel is the only truth for me
And I get by on this naivete of youth

If what I feel is the only truth
And what I give out will make up what I'll receive
Can I still leave behind my naivete of youth?
Will I be crucified for wanting to believe?
I believe

And if we don't worry about a thing
Will we be sorry when the rain is falling again
And what does it matter
If fortune should favor
It's never the final amen

If what I feel is the only truth
And what I give out will make up what I'll receive
Can I still leave behind my naivete of youth?
Will I be crucified for wanting to believe?
I believe

I think this song is about the fact that when it comes to arguments or differing points of view, you think you're right and also know that the other person believes in their truth just as much. It's hard to make (not just romantic but every kind of) relationships work when two people are very different, so he's contemplating whether they should try and force their opinion on one another until someone gives in, or just agree to disagree and hope their differences won't matter in the long run. He's worried the other person is not so forgiving and indifferent about it, and all these disagreements will drive them away from him, but he can't change overnight (and doesn't think he should anyways).

I think it's about young love and about the fact that sometimes when you grow older you will also grow apart from someone you loved. And this person still wants to believe that those feelings from the past are still alive but isn't really sure about it. The part I like the most: "N' if they had a king for fools would you wear the crown? Build us up again and make us last". I think it's about still trying to find something to keep the relationship alive though there's no really point. But I think that part of that person still wants that the other would try to make it last though the person himself is already giving up. Shortly, I think it's about having confused feelings about someone you used to love.

i think this song is a person worrying that they will bring down the person they're dating, and possibly ruin their life but still believes in the relationship

I think he's saying that he is too naive to keep the relationship going. He is going to make a lot of mistakes and that they will disagree at a lot of points. He wishes to change who he is, become a better person; more mature. He is expecting her meanwhile to take care of things, be the adult. To make them remember the old emotions of love when they are falling apart. He wants her to invest herself and make their relationship work so hard; to the point that people would call her a king of fools. He wants to believe that he could leave behind is childish behaviour and himself contribute to the relationship at some point.
