The New Underground Lyrics
Welcome
You're under control
And buried like a mole
A thousand feet below
Waiting
With all that we've got
Our reputation's shot
A ninety-story fall
No one here can make a sound
We're all ghosts in this town
We are standing in the trenches
Of the new underground
Pipe down
Stay under control
It's getting so absurd
Soon everything will turn
It's that time
To see the Sun
There'll be a crack
And a day will come
Maybe then we'll be the ones
Never can be sure
The shot heard 'round the world
No one here can make a sound
We're just ghosts in this town
We are standing in the trenches
Of the new underground
No one here can make a sound
We're just ghosts in this town
We are standing in the trenches
Of the new underground
All the walls are coming down
We're still hanging around
We are digging in the trenches
Of the new underground
(All right, yeah, all right, uh-huh)
(All right, yeah, all right, uh-huh)
(Yeah, I got it, uh-huh, all right)
(Uh-huh, all right, yeah, uh-huh)
(Uh huh, I got it, morning, I know you are)
(I got it, I got it, make that shit funky, yeah)
You're under control
And buried like a mole
A thousand feet below
Waiting
With all that we've got
Our reputation's shot
A ninety-story fall
We're all ghosts in this town
We are standing in the trenches
Of the new underground
Stay under control
It's getting so absurd
Soon everything will turn
It's that time
To see the Sun
There'll be a crack
And a day will come
Maybe then we'll be the ones
Never can be sure
The shot heard 'round the world
We're just ghosts in this town
We are standing in the trenches
Of the new underground
We're just ghosts in this town
We are standing in the trenches
Of the new underground
We're still hanging around
We are digging in the trenches
Of the new underground
(All right, yeah, all right, uh-huh)
(Yeah, I got it, uh-huh, all right)
(Uh-huh, all right, yeah, uh-huh)
(Uh huh, I got it, morning, I know you are)

This a very energetic song, especially live. Although it doesnt fit with the flow of the new album that well, its still a fun listen. As for the lyrics....
In a few magazine articles, Ryan Miller has said that he wrote the lyrics to the new album while living with a backdrop of a "president that went to war for some very dubious reasons." That said, I think this song can be interpreted politically. Welcome/You're under control/buried like mole....Our reputation's shot/a thousand story fall. These lyrics conjure up images of citizens being handstrung by the gov, and frustrated that we can't do anything to stop the way our government is moving. The "Our reputation's shot" line refers the the United States' losing of respect in the global community. "No one here can make a sound/We're all ghosts in this town." I think Miller is referring again to citizens who are frustrated with the war or the bush admin in general.
Of course, I could be way off, and that's only a dissection of a few on the lines. What do you guys think?
Not a bad song (except those first two lines made me cringe), but--musically and conceptually--it sounds like kind of a rip-off of Radiohead's "Electioneering," about not really having a say in anything important most of the time.
Agreed. Definitely the worst first two lines in any Guster song ever. But the meaning that's proposed here seems pretty legit, and I think it's a pretty intelligently written song in the end.
Dostoyevsky reference? Quite possible that I'm reading way too much into this.
XD wake up, sheeple!!
