God's Children Lyrics

Man made the buildings that reach for the sky.
And man made the motorcar and learned how to drive.
But he didn't make the flowers and he didn't make the trees.
And he didn't make you and he didn't make me.
And hes got no right to turn us into machines.

Oh, hes got no right at all, 'cause we are all God's Children.
And they got no right to change us, Oh we got to back the way the good Lord made us all.

I Don't want this world to change me.
I want to go back the way the good Lord made me.
Same Lungs that he gave me to breathe with.
same eyes he gave me to see with.

Oh, the richman, poorman, the saint and the sinner.
The wise man, the simpleton and the loser and the winner.

We all look the same to him.
Stripped of are cloaks and all the things we own.

Oh, the day that we are born, we are all God's children.
And they've got no right to change us.
Oh,we gotta go back the way the good lord made

Oh, the good Lord made us all,
and we are all his children.
And they got no right to change us.
Oh we gotta go back the way the good Lord made us all.

I certainly don't think it's sarcastic. Still, I don't necessarily think it's referring to God as a specific diety, but more as a concept. This is one of a good many of Ray's songs about Man vs. Nature. The idea is that there is a certain natural order to things, and that the power of nature (or God, if you will) is greater than man.

This song was written for an absurd movie (Percy) in which the hero is seeking a penis transplant. When Ray was comissioned to write a song for it, he responded with this biting commentary on the morality of transplants.

@donutbandit and PursuitofLife: That's interesting information, thanks. Gives a better perspective than Ray Davies 'having found God'. Which wouldhave been a major putdown to my respect for him as a song writer.

@donutbandit @Jepz11 Ray is proving a moral critique--that is, the morality of this belief in God--as stated in the original comment but which you did not understand.

The lyrics imply that only God has the moral authority to tamper with nature, not man. In the context of Percy, this would imply that we should not interfere with what God has given us (via genital enhancing surgery).

I respect his beliefs in his writing, and one of my favourites is the Deist anthem Big Sky in which Ray explains his concept and belief in God.

brilliant lyrics! It's a crime that almost noone comments on the kinks. It's a little weird that they believe in God and even portray him in a good way. You think they are being sarcastic? Idon't, the song seems sincere but who knows... any opinions or information?
