Bad Penny Lyrics

Ought to know what a liar I am, ought to know me by now
Don't curse me for my nature, don't bless me for my wrongs
Just a bad penny, I always come back to you
Just a bad penny
Just a bad penny, I always come back to you
Should have known you couldn't trust me far as you can throw me, throw me
Couldn't throw me too far
Just a bad penny, couldn't throw me too far
I think I fucked your girlfriend once... maybe twice, I don't remember
Then I fucked all your friends' girlfriends -- now they hate you
Just a bad penny, just a bad penny
Just a bad penny, just a bad penny
Such a bad penny, such a bad penny
Bad, bad penny, bad, bad penny
Ought to know what a liar I am, ought to know me by now
Such a bad penny
Ooh bad, bad penny, bad, bad penny
Ought to know what a liar I am, ought to know me by now
Ought've known you couldn't trust me as far as you can throw me, throw me
Such a bad penny, such a bad penny
Such a bad penny, such a bad penny
Slap my hand

Amazing bit, that is... I think it's about people who just burn their bridges and look out for themselves and themselves only.

"Don't curse me for my nature," and then what is it? Is it really "don't bless me for my luck," or is it "don't bless me for my role"? Or "Don't blast me for my role?" "Don't bless me for my wrongs?" "Don't blast me for my wrongs?"

Knowing Albini to be quite the poetic fellow, it seems to me like he wouldn't be redundant, but rather he would cover two sides of the coin in a couplet like that. I always figured it was "Don't curse me for my nature / Don't bless me for my role," IE, don't judge me either way, I just do what I do.

Could be, I'm just going by the site I saw these lyrics on. A lot of the lyrics on that site are pretty off the mark, if I'm honest, but they're still the closest I've seen...

In fact, I always assumed it was 'don't bless me for my wrongs', which'll teach me not to proof-read the lyrics before I post them...

Based on the lyrics, I tend to think Mr Albini is referring to another side/facet of the same person. Thus the song is referring to how this person "ought to know" them/how bad the penny is - because they're one and the same. I don't think it's talking about a third person, as evidenced by the lines below re girlfriend/friends' girlfriends.

E.g.

"Couldn't throw me too far" "Ought to know what a liar I am, ought to know me by now" "Ought've known you couldn't trust me as far as you can throw me, throw me" (i.e. can't escape self)

"I think I fucked your girlfriend once... maybe twice, I don't remember Then I fucked all your friends' girlfriends -- now they hate you" (i.e. these people now hate the facet of the person/personality this song is referring to).
