Sweet Thursday Lyrics
I'm waiting in the pines
I'm waiting in the forest
Pilon at my side
The treasure lies before us
And so we started walking
We knew they couldn't harm us
And how the wind is crying
When misty morning dawn breaks
We'll walk back to the flats
With gallons in our hands
We're walking in the fields
We're working on the farms
We do just like our fathers
How can they take that from us?
And so we started driving
We had no choice to leave this
The bowl was left behind us
For Hooverville's before us
Three hundred thousand
Bodies who can't rest
Sweet Thursday is calling me back up to Monterey
Up to Monterey
So I started driving
And left my home behind me
The row there kept reminding
Of pages in your writing
Sweet Thursday is calling me back up to Monterey
Up to Monterey
I'm waiting in the forest
Pilon at my side
The treasure lies before us
And so we started walking
We knew they couldn't harm us
And how the wind is crying
When misty morning dawn breaks
With gallons in our hands
We're working on the farms
We do just like our fathers
How can they take that from us?
We had no choice to leave this
The bowl was left behind us
For Hooverville's before us
Bodies who can't rest
Up to Monterey
And left my home behind me
The row there kept reminding
Of pages in your writing
Up to Monterey

In Monterey, on the California coast, Sweet Thursday is what they call the day after Lousy Wednesday, which is one of those days that is just naturally bad.
i always wondered what this song was about. i had no idea about Lousy Wednesday and Sweet Thursday.
This song is basically a tribute to John Steinbeck. Sweet Thursday is the title of one of his books.
"I'm waiting in the pines I'm waiting in the forest Pilon at my side The treasure lies before us"
this is a reference to tortilla flat by steinbeck when pilon and pablo look for buried treasure to give to danny for rent.
"We'll walk back to the flats With gallons in our hands"
this is also a reference to tortilla flat, in which the boys at Danny's house consume an unhealthy amount of wine.
"We're walking in the fields We're working on the farms We do just like our fathers How can they take that from us?"
this is either a reference to in dubious battle, or the grapes of wrath.
"And so we started driving We had no choice to leave this The bowl was left behind us For Hooverville's before us"
an obvious reference to the grapes of wrath.
yes, i am a HUGE fan of steinbeck and costa.
