Sugar on My Tongue Lyrics

O--h, O--h, she's my neighbour
Fill my cup, I'll bet you baby
She could fill it up
She put the sugar on my tongue
she's gonna gimme gimme gimme some

She gonna put that sugar on my tongue
She's gonna gonna gimme gimme gimme some
She'll put it right there on my tongue
Put it right there on my tongue

Sweet sweet, lover lover
Never never never find another
to put sugar on my tongue
Gimme gimme some some

she put the sugar on my tongue
she's gonne gimme gimme gimme some
She put it right there on my tongue
Put it right there on my tongue

I've been waiting years and years
Finally I see that you appear
My friends are here, and they ask of me
'Is this the time that we're gonna see
her put the sugar on your tongue'

she's gonna put the sugar on my tongue
she's gonna put the sugar on my tongue
she's gonna gimme gimme some
She put it right there on my tongue
put it right there on my tongue

Sugar on my tongue
yippee yippee yum yum ! goodie goodie gum drop !

she's gonna put the sugar on my tongue
she's gonna put the sugar on my tongue
she's gonna gimme gimme some
She put it right there on my tongue
put it right there on my tongue

Holy cow! It's not a drug reference. It's all about sex. If David Byrne were going to do a drug reference, he'd be a lot more clever and a lot more obvious.

The saying "give me some sugar" has its origins in the south; it is a very old saying. Mothers/grandmothers/aunts would say it lovingly to children when wanting an innocent hug/kiss. Love the song. Love the band. D.B. is extremely talented, right up there beneath the big guns...Morrison; Mercery; Clapton; etc.

Growing up in the sixties I saw so many jokes start with 'borrowing sugar from the neighbor', which always implied sex. I'm convinced that he speaks to that same scenario. "She's my neighbor, fill my cup" is where it starts. "Will she gimme gimme some?" says it all, to me. He also refers to her as a unique lover.

Then he states that his friends want to see her put the sugar on his tongue - so anything's possible!

Now - how about the music? This song was twenty years ahead of its time, like so much from Talking Heads.

Thanks to DB and the group for this gem!

I can't believe no one has commented this.

Anyway, it sounds to me like it's about ecstacy, or perhaps not, as I'm quick to say that anyway, and a few friends suspect oral sex. Oh, spicy.

@DaLocoBrat More likley to be LSD (aka Acid). Dealers would soak papler with LSD, then cut squares aka "cubes" from paper, and sell them. You put it on your tongue for absorbtion; much like you do a sugar cube.

The Talking Heads are a 60s band; it's hardly likely they would be a MDMA users. Acid is more likely.

@dustin1172 nah we call the squares stamps or blotter and so many other things cubes mean you're literally getting liquid LSD dripped on to sugar cubes

The drug PCP is refered to as sugar and can be ingested orally....

So this song being about drugs is highly possible.

@speakingintongues More likely it's about LSD, or sex.

Speaking as a writer, my first thought on these lyrics is that they could easily be about sex OR drugs OR actual sugar for that matter. It's pretty common for a songwriter (especially a good one) to write a song that works from multiple different angles. The whole bridge part about 'my friends ask of me' makes me think that this song is about some lost love or crush that's possibly returning into the singer's life, but that at its core has been wrapped in a metaphor that is vaguely sexual and/or drug related. I think all the interpretations are correct. The song just works on so many levels that it's easy for the listener to fill in the blanks however they see fit.

Maybe. Or maybe the entire song is one big cunnilingus reference. Who knows?

My Interpretation

I'll be sure to listen to it when I'm on my east coast beach weekend out of town:) Thanks for the suggestion. I'll be sure to pick someone who can tell the difference between a woman's crotch and a baby girl's crotch...someone who's not an free prostitute.

It's from the perpective of a horse being given sugar cubes!

And very cleverly, the lyrics also work at a human level.

My Interpretation

This one is about LSD even if it isn't . . . the reference to liquid acid, frequently applied to sugar cubes, is so clear that even if its really about sex or love - it is also about LSD. Just as references to mainlines and injection are likely to give a song a 'heroin layer', even if the subject is actually something else. Great song.
