Fix what’s wrong, but don’t rewrite what the artist wrote. Stick to the official released version — album booklet, label site, verified lyric video, etc. If you’re guessing, pause and double-check.
Respect the structure
Songs have rhythm. Pages do too. Leave line breaks where they belong. Don’t smash things together or add extra empty space just for looks.
Punctuation counts (but vibe-editing doesn’t)
Correct typos? Yes. Re-punctuating a whole verse because it ‘looks better’? Probably not. Keep capitalization and punctuation close to the official source.
Don’t mix versions
If you’re editing the explicit version, keep it explicit. If it’s the clean version, keep it clean. No mashups.
Let the lyrics be lyrics
This isn’t the place for interpretations, memories, stories, or trivia — that’s what comments are for. Keep metadata, translations, and bracketed stage directions out unless they’re officially part of the song.
Edit lightly
If two lines are wrong… fix the two lines. No need to bulldoze the whole page. Think ‘surgical,’ not ‘remix.’
When in doubt, ask the crowd
Not sure what they’re singing in that fuzzy bridge? Drop a question in the comments and let the music nerds swarm. Someone always knows.
I think this is the saddest, darkest song the RHCP ever created.
It makes me think of someone with nowhere to go, who has just been rejected from their last point of salvation. And now they're wandering the dirty, unclean streets of L.A. at night, without anywhere to go. Everywhere they turn, they see unkind faces, pained expressions, reflected of their own screw-ups and the bleakness of drug addiction.
I adore this song in so many ways, the feel of it is something I wouldn't expect from that album. Considering the other tracks are wild party songs. But I love it no matter what. & VanceD, I love your explanation of the song. Bravo!
If you want to know who this song is about or what it's about read The Red Hot Chili Peppers Digitally remastered 1984 CD lyrics book, and Flea will fill you in with the details.
For some reason, I'm more reminded of the desert, and/or a Native American. I think it may be because of the wailing sounds in the background, which remind me of the chants and songs that Native Americans sometimes performed in ceremonies.
I always get the same mental image when I hear this song: An old Native American man standing on a windy desert plain, with nothing but desolation and harsh sunlight beating down and stretching as far as the eye can see in every direction.
Hey Mrs. Sidekik, what if I don't have the original CD in its remastered version? why not post the comments here itself, it not in the entirety, than relevant snippets? c'mon, that's not copyright infringement, people need to know that stuff... this is a songmeanings database!
anyways, yeah, this song is a huge mystery to me, I feel all these things and I'm not sure if its coming from the chilis, andy gill, and it's just, whoa! this progressive rock and western sound, that considered along with the whole of the chili peppers is all the more stirring
Hi guys, I'm an Italian boy and I cannot explain myself what's the real meaning of the Title of this song, can someone explain me, it seems sometyhing like an urban slang.
hmm i its hard to tell for us too. I has "Grand", like big or great, "Pappy", which i dont know, like poppa or dad? "Du", uh.....do i guess, and "plenty", like a lot. The actually meaning of the whole song i dont know, but i know what it means to me. For me, i found this song when i was in a time of great stress and depression (my first year of college) Now it sort-of represents lost friends and that whole time period. I love playing it by myself because i am reminded of those times...

The intro and early parts of Venice Queen are clearly influenced by this recording. It's the most mature recording from the band's first album.
didn't they play this song at dave navarro's debut with rhcp? Woodstock '94? With light-bulbs and anthony on guitar AS WELL?
