Dead Set On Destruction Lyrics

Well I’m standing in the queue
And I can’t stand any more missing you
And I, I can’t stand the pain
And I can’t get home ’cause of a hurricane
Dead set on destruction
Dead set on destruction

There’s no flights home today
And no services out on the motorway
And I, I can’t leave the ground
And I can’t find a place now to put her down
Dead set on destruction
Dead set on destruction

The Atlantic winds are high
There’s only one virgin and if she don’t fly
They, they can’t land the plane
And they can’t get home ’cause of a hurricane
Dead set on destruction [X12]

The political message doesn't ring true to me. I think it's a straight up love song (like many Du songs), he's waited so long that he's willing to do something dangerous, i.e. -- fly home in a hurricane.

The virgin is just a silly play on Virgin Atlantic Airline.

I think ratanx is right.

I would guess it's about withdrawl, stuck in an airport with no heroin("can't get off the ground", "no service on the motorway"). I thought it was a song about getting to a lover but couldn't get my head around the title. Then I thought about Grant Hart, an addict, being stuck at an airport. I don't think he was singing about missing a person.

The beauty of this song's lyrics are they could apply to any number of things - a relationship, a war, jonesing for drugs - and whichever you choose, the words still ring true. Catchy as hell, too!

Obviously, its a song about anxiety or pain related to endless waiting due to circumcstances.

However, knowing that DUs wrote many political songs, my guess is that it might have another meaning - quite possibly, war in Vietnam or some similar event.

Simply put - logic tells that "waiting" and "destruction" don't mix very well.

i think you're right. i found something on wikipedia related to Vietnam (i'm not sure how colclusive this is): "Beginning in the summer of 1955 [...] 450,000 [vietnamese] people, primarily Catholics, travelled from the north to south, in aircraft and ships provided by the France and U.S. . CIA propaganda efforts increased the outflow with slogans such as "

the Virgin Mary is going South" (sorry for double-posting but it didn't show my entire message)
