Arsenic Lyrics

Guess it'll pass here in my bed
I set a ticking time bomb in my head
I set it off to punish my transgressions

As the poison makes its way
I'm watching as my hands begin to shake
And now it's just regrets and every second guess
Never thought we'd end up here that night when you said

The car's out back, let's see this through
They told me they had all this proof
I know what I have done is wrong
I sealed your fate and told the truth
Now the gallows hang for you

They'll find me here in a couple of days
I wonder what your wife and kids would say
He damn sure had it coming

They'll say I did it cause of shame
Cause I went and damned you to be safe
They'll say it's just as well, I hope he burns in hell
Guilt dealt him a hand that forced his fate just the same

I sealed your fate and told the truth
They told me they had all this proof
They said they'd found the rusted spade
And matched the footprints to your shoe
Now the gallows hang for you

This turned out to be my fatal mistake
And I'll take it to my grave
Say a prayer, my soul's at the stake
And there's not much left to save

I sealed your fate and told the truth
They told me they had all this proof
They said they'd found the rusted spade
And matched the footprints to your shoes
Now the gallows hang for you

I think this is about someone who got away with murder and then the person singing the song knows that he's guilty but the police have proof pointing to someone else so the person singing the song fames the guilty murderer by commiting suicide and making it look like it was murder. That's quite literal but it's one interpretation.

You're on the right track but I think you're wrong on a couple of points. The lines . "Never thought we'd end up here that night when you said The car's out back, let's see this through"

Clearly imply that this was a crime they committed together. The rest is pretty straight forward. The singer is killing himself with poison after telling the cops everything they needed to know to convict his friend. "I sealed your fate, and told the truth" pretty much rests the case. I'm not sure how you got that he was framing his friend for...

I'm thinking the singer was accomplice to a crime, and when the police interrogated him, they promised him his freedom if he sells out his partner. They played the traditional cop game where they tell you they have all the facts, and try to make it look like they'll catch him anyway, but you could get off if you just testify against them. So after selling out his friend to the cops, he felt guilty and committed suicide. Kind of a reflection on these events while the poison slowly kills him off.
