The speaker was in a relationship with someone for a long time and it ended suddenly and unexpectedly. The speaker wants to recognize the emotions and anxiety even though it's painful, while the other wants to put up walls and block it out. They were together for a long time, the quintessential couple, and had all the same friends. They're trying to make it civil and don't want the situation to be awkward for their friends and make them choose between them. I love this song.
