the poetry in this song is amazing, it sums up everything that summer means to me. and its impermenance, and how when its getting near the end you just try to hang on for it and make it last forever. but then it just never does. it just makes me long for summer right now tbh.
Amazing song. You really can sense a youthful vibrancy to the music and feel the rejuvenation that Summer brings, the instrumentals surreal, hazy and echoed like memories are, and how it seems to crash as Autumn penetrates the bliss, leaving one feeling almost frantic because they have no power over it.
I do wonder why it's David's last Summer. Maybe it just feels like Summer will never arrive again once Winter hits? Or maybe this David died? Jarvis's faint voice in the background at the end of the song begs "Oh, I want you to stay." Not sure, but more likely it's just about Summer.
I always took this song as it was David's last summer as he didn't live through to the next one. The verses are from David's perspective, as though he wrote them down as prose, reminiscing once autumn had set in. The song has such wonderful imagery that along with the instrumental, you can really envisage that it's summer.
David has such a lament for the cold of winter and it's perhaps symbolic that as soon as summer is over, his love interest has to leave. Perhaps she's off to university, or back to her home country. It's my interpretation, given the title and the final verse, that David completed suicide.
I went to the same school as Jarvis and lived in the same area (Intake Sheffield)...I know where he is talking about...Check out Stanhope Rd from Babies...just off Hollindsend Rd. I think I know the David in the story..maybe it was Azo?
I wonder if the David in this song is the same David from 'Babies'
