The Great Salt Lake Lyrics
Back of the boat was painted wreckin' ball
There was country music playing, but he don't like it at all
And red fire poppin' on the rained-down woody
His whiskey bottle spillin' in a lake that's made of sa-a-alt
Well look out Michael there's a note on the door it saying,
"Everybody listen, you'll be the next Omaha"
Now if you find yourself falling apart
Then I'm sure I could steer
On
The Great Salt Lake
Falling apart
And I'm sure I could steer
On
The Great Salt Lake
Your old man was but a wishing machine
It's time that you could spare; now he's getting o-o-old
When Billy Lorett had found a watering hole
It's a place to lay yourself on the heads of coyote
Now if you find yourself falling apart
Then I'm sure I could steer
On
The Great Salt Lake
Follow me home
We want more
Follow me home
We all want more
If ever beat down
We know who we are
They know we all want more
If ever beat down
We know who we are
They know we all want more
There was country music playing, but he don't like it at all
And red fire poppin' on the rained-down woody
His whiskey bottle spillin' in a lake that's made of sa-a-alt
"Everybody listen, you'll be the next Omaha"
Then I'm sure I could steer
On
The Great Salt Lake
And I'm sure I could steer

It's time that you could spare; now he's getting o-o-old
When Billy Lorett had found a watering hole
It's a place to lay yourself on the heads of coyote
Then I'm sure I could steer

We know who we are
They know we all want more

We know who we are
They know we all want more

it simply means, I would stand next to you as you cry.
Doesn't seem like too many people use this site anymore but I'm still surprised that nobody has come up with this connection: The Great Saltair was a classic music/dance hall around the turn of the Century. It was considered the Coney Island of the West when it mysteriously burned down in the 1920's. One rumor was that alcohol was involved. Ultimately is was torn down and rebuilt. Look for lyric references to a wishing machine, wrecking ball, fire, and alcohol. Perhaps some of it's ghosts still "Stand" on The Great Salt Lake!
This is one of my favorite songs. Honestly don't even know all the lyrics, but I always imagined a sad guy in some dingy country bar drinking his sorrows away and leaving a 'great salt lake' of tears.
we will be the next on the hold
i'm pretty sure this is right based on live performances and the cd. i've seen BOH a couple times live and they rock. I think the song is about searching for a home, one which can be found even in the most desolate of places.

by the way, i think he's drawing on salt flats as a type of metaphor, nothing can grow there but he could still stand, or find a home there

you know i listen to it again, and i hear instead of 'Well look out back there was a note on the door'
i hear;
'well look out michael there is a note on the door'
mm i'm pretty sure he says "hull" and not "hold' seeing as how the latter doesnt make much sense.
what i got was:
"well look out back, well there's a note on the door, sayin 'everybody listen we'll be the next over hull'"
That is very plausible...but i just cant hear it... i hear michael! i feel like i am crazy...haha
i think its:
"Well, look out Michael, there's a note on the door, Everybody listen, we'll be the next Omaha"
referring, possibly, to that Bright Eyes is from there and Conor Oberst has started a label--including the band Rilo Kiley, who has also referenced "Omaha's booming music scene" in one of their songs. although who knows.
