It seems like a long distant relationship that's kind of built on false expectations. They care for each other, but aren't sure if they'll ever really be together. They distract each other from the crappy things in their lives, and keep each other from going over the edge. They make up things that are going to happen when they're together. If they're ever together.
I am obsessed wit h this song right now. It really hits close to home. I'm suprised it hasn't gotten more commentary, seriously.
this song reflects my recent relationship. we even drove from here in south carolina to savannah to get away and have a nice romantic getaway. we didnt know about this song then, but it really really hits very close to home. this song means everything to me.

I love this song so much. it's absolutly beautiful. My take, it's just a couple who are in love. They don't need anyone else, only each other, and they have both saved each other from unhappiness ( the "you really caught me, dear" part ) and drive to savannah to settle down.
i dont get the whole carolina-savannah concept. is it simply he just left carolina for savannah? or is it something else
this song is so sad, but I love it.
I get the feeling that the speaker was on the road far from home and was having a horrible time, for whatever reason. He meets a girl at his lowest point and she brings him out of that low point. He realizes he loves her and wants to go somewhere that they can be together without any interruption, so they go off to Savannah (which is in South Carolina and Georgia, but SC is where the band is from) to be alone and start over.
