I Go to the Barn Because I Like the Lyrics
well i'd like to think i'm the mess you'd wear with pride.
like some empty dress on the bed you've laid out for tonight.
maybe i'll tell you sometime.
time.
sometime.
and you were right
right
you were right
outside,by your doorstep
in a worn out suit and tie.
i'll wait
for you to come down
where you'll find me
where we'll shine.
(3x)

Well, that gives us plenty of time to get it to you! drum sting
here is my interpretation, if anyone is interested: the first 3 lines are easy, he loves this girl, but doesnt know how to tell her, he is shy, and says maybe i will tell you sometime.
time . . . time gets away from him, and he never gets the chance to tell her she dies without ever knowing
you were right. . .Right... He realizes that she was the only right one for him, but now its too late. he never marries, never even is interested in another woman again I'll wait by your doorstep, in a worn out suit and tie. ... this is both literal, and figurative. he is now a very old man, so he goes to the place where she used to live, sits out by her door step, and waits for her to come down from heaven to get him. As he is dying, he waits for her to find him and take him with her back to heaven
This song turns beautiful, yet somehow tragic, with the last half of the song.
he will wait, but she will come down. she already has
This is actually the second version of this song. The first is called "I'd Like to Think," and isn't under the Band of Horses name but instead by Nov. 16--which is, without getting into the history, the same band as Band of Horses. If you get get a hold of it, I totally recommend the other version--it's only availible on the Yeti 3 comp, as far as I know.
Not that I'm dissing this one...both lovely, melancholy songs.
who knows about the title. I've always read it into the next track of the album, "monsters".
I go to the barn because I like the monsters.
@drawrof Band of Horses. That's how it reads when I play it on my amazon music account. I go to the barn because I like the band of horses.

To me, this song is all about heartbreak. "I'd like to think I'm the mess you'd wear with pride" are his insecurities showing through, and the dream of a second chance. What was once a confident man is now a broken man with no direction, now ground below his feet. The empty dress are all the hopes and dreams they had for a happy future together. She was right that he would break her heart. And he'll sit and wait, forever, on a dream that they'll find each other again, and find the happiness they once had. It's so sad because it will never be the same.
I never interpreted this song to be a song of heartbreak. It sounds to me like a story of old love like new again. I picture an older couple, and the singer admitting his faults but the woman loves him anyway. I just get a feeling of fond reminiscence more than melancholy when I hear it.
Sometimes when I look into song meanings, I have to keep in mind that quote from Sigmund Freud on dream analysis: "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar." I find I'll enjoy the songs more if I just go with my gut feeling once in awhile.
Anyway, I think I'll play this on my anniversary. I think it'll fit perfectly.
The title is what gets me the most. It makes me as the question, what does he like? He goes to the barn because he likes the what? It sorta leaves the final word to be open to interpretation. Or maybe it's meant to be sorta like he's cut off. Maybe he's to sad to say what he likes. If its a song about heartbreak, maybe he likes to go to the barn because he likes the way it reminds him of his love. Who knows.
@zareox7 I know this is a really old comment and you'll probably never even see this, but someone mentioned this to me not so long ago and it finally clicked. When this song plays on my amazon music acount it shows the song name followed by the band name, nothing else in between. So, it literally reads as, "I Go To The Barn Because I Like The Band Of Horses". I don't know why, but I got super giddy after I finally realized that! Love this song!!!
