Eveline Lyrics

Eveline grips the railing
As her lover calls her to the sea
Won't you sail with me?
She can't hear
Being just a step away from
Happiness and sanity blurs
And drives her crazier

Eveline take care of your father
I cared for you
Words her dying mother spoke
Kill her too

Eveline stays

Just as a side note, I think the lyric actually is: "She can't hear it Just a step away from happiness And sanity blurs"

(not guilt, I mean)

harlequinforest, there is definitely nothing in this song about her killing her parents.

She's torn between her lover calling her to go away with him, but she also doesn't want to leave her father. Her mother told her, "Take care of your father," before she died and it kills Eveline to have to chose between the two.

Her love for her parents and obligation to take care of her father proves stronger. She stays.

I love the harmonies in this song. They're kind of unconventional, but always end up coming together at the end.

Okay, lyrics fixed! That's what I get for taking 'em off another website instead of just looking in the book in the first place. Oh well. Anyhoo, love the lyrics, but the instrumental part on this song is amazing!

I love the chords in this song. They're just...chilling..I think "chilling" is the right word. It's so beautiful.

one of my favorite short stories ever is james joyces' "Eveline"; it's about a girl who's mother dies when she is young, and she is abused by her brothers and father. she meets a man who can take her away from it all, but she decides to stay. i was thrilled to see this one on the cd :)

I have been listening to this song for years and it wasn't until I read the story 'Eveline' in english class that I understood what its about. It's all about how she has to decide between staying at home with her abusive family to take care of them like she had promised her mother on her deathbed she would, or run away with her lover. In the end she chooses to stay.

At first I didn't like this song because of how jarring the melody and harmonies are, but after awhile they became sort of hauntingly beautiful.

This song mirrors the short story of the same name by James Joyce in his compilation "Dubliners." A young girl wants to leave with the someone who loves her, but stays with her not-so-kind father because it was her mother's dying request. It's incredibly sad. The sort of thing that no matter what she'd chosen, you'd feel bad.
