Everlasting Love Lyrics

He wasn't looking for a pretty face
She wasn't searching for the latest style
He didn't want someone who walked straight off the tv
She needed someone with an interior smile

She wasn't looking for a cuddle in the back seat
He wasn't looking for a five minute thrill
She wasn't thinking of tomorrow or of next week
This vacancy he meant to permanently fill

I need an everlasting love
I need a friend and a lover divine
An everlasting precious love
Wait for it, wait for it, give it some time

Back in the world of disposable emotion
In the climate of temporary dreams
He wasn't looking for a notch on his bedpost
A love to push, pull, and burst at the seams

I need an everlasting love
I need a friend and a lover divine
An everlasting precious love
Wait for it, wait for it, give it some time

Is this love worth waiting for?
Something special, something pure

[chorus]

Is this love worth waiting for?
Bitterness will die for sure
Something precious, something pure
Is this love worth waiting for?

[chorus]

That's the point. The people in the song weren't looking for that. They didn't want meaningless sexual gratifications, they wanted something that would stand the test of time. I adore this song! In this day & age, sexual and emotional attitudes, both in real life, and in our entertainment, has gotten out of hand. Barely legal girls prancing around half naked, guys only caring about what's on a woman's chest and backside, people throwing the word "love" around yet bailing from relationships the second something goes wrong or something better comes along. It's disgusting.

So, this song's a breath of fresh air, then and now. It's about love, true love the way it's supposed to be. More "artists" should put out music like this!

lanakael: Absolutely, 100% agree. Like the singer, I also couldn't care less about one night stands or scoring or glorious body parts... or any of that empty stuff. I want a woman who's soul I understand and admire. For me to say looks don't matter at all wouldn't be true, but it matters far, far less than her personality.

For the record, I have nothing against casual sex, and think the idea that if you want more than that, you have to "wait for it" is a false dichotomy. Many hold that a rapid (ethical) seduction is the best way to begin a long-term relationship.

That said, this song has a "transcendental" quality that moves me. Although I've learned it was written in the late '80s, I associate it with a passage in a novel I read in 1996, in which the protagonist has found the realm of the gods and is now entering it. It gave me a weepy feeling that comes back when I hear this song. Perhaps I was hearing it on the radio at the time, or a cover of it.

A few other love songs give me the same feeling, such as The Seekers' "Colours of My Life." And I get something similar from the Byrds' "Eight Miles High," which is not about love, but a psychedelic trip. The common thread for me is this sense of transcendence, going beyond ordinary experience and uniting with a more ultimate reality.

Cuddle in the back seat? Five-minute thrill? I don't like the sound of that. Otherwise, it seems like a nice enough song.
