The Youngest Was The Most Loved Lyrics
The youngest was the most loved
The youngest was the shielded
We kept him from the world's glare
And he turned into a killer
Retroussé nose
Turned up and mischievous
Forget-me-not eyes that cried if we ever left his side
There is no such thing in life as normal
There is no such thing in life as normal
The youngest was the most loved
The youngest was the cherub
A small boy from a poor house
Who turned into a killer
A blushed rose if he had to say ‘hello’
A lopsided grin strained to keep the shyness in
There is no such thing in life as normal
There is no such thing in life as normal
The youngest was the most loved
The youngest was the cherub
The look was all before him
With a lovely wife beside him
The youngest was the most loved
The youngest was the cherub
We kept him from the world's glare
And he turned into a killer
There is no such thing in life as normal
There is no such thing in life as normal
The youngest was the shielded
We kept him from the world's glare
And he turned into a killer
Retroussé nose

After a long career, how many 46 year olds produce music of this quality? Not just this song, the entire album. Amazing.
Obviously Mozza's continuing fascination with the roots of the serial killer. See Jack the Ripper, Last of the Famous... for examples of this in his work if you weren't aware of it. Whereas Last of the Famous... seems to blame the media's glorification of violence and criminality (referencing The Krays), this song blames upbringing. In this case, the youngest child was spoiled and loved above other siblings and somehow, still turned into a killer. Morrissey challenges the stereotype of killers coming from poor backgrounds and broken homes. This child came from an evidently quite snobbish family who loved him and supported him, called him a 'cherub'. But then, as he reiterates with the help of an Italian children's choir, 'There is no such thing as normal'. As well as being a brilliant chant for Mozzites the world over, it is perhaps Morrissey's belief that evil and the killing instinct is unavoidable. Not the fault of anyone, rather a born trait. This song is brilliant. His wailing at the end combined with the music is awe-inspiring!
"'Yes, the babies came along pretty fast, to be sure. But I never minded. I was fond of them all. The youngest one, that we didn't any of us want, is the one we love best now.'" My Ántonia - Willa Cather
For me, as the oldest child, I read this song as, the older children may have been ignored, even neglected in favour of the youngest, but where one may have expected them to become the psychotic one the youngest who had a loved childhood turned into the one with issues. I don't think it necessarily means a literal killer.
Um, Mozza fan, see the line: "A small boy from a poor house"
yes but other than that small oversight i thought it was an intuitive take on the song
I think he's also reprimanding over protective parents: We kept him from the world's glare And he turned into a killer
This is my own toughts but what i think Morrissey is trying to say is that we in the younger generations has been so overprotected and shilded from all tha bad things that our grand parents has seen. They wanted us to grow upp away from war och death. But the thing they dident know was that thay made us in to peopol that just dont realy care about other parts of the world any more. We turnd into killers
Interesting interpretation you've got going on there, nuwan.
thanx means alot
i think it's about people who think this world is fill with evil and if they kept there kids away they will be safe i know some parents who would like there children to have nothing to do with this life so the wont turn bad
