"Meat and Potatoes" is a double-entente, of course. "She wanted more than 'meat and potatoes'." His rejoinder: "the 'arrow' of our love is straight and true." In that sense, the ending isn't weird or somber at all.
why has no one commented on this song its fabulous, as with many belle and sebastian songs its got some sarcastic, funny elements, but it ends with this weird somber note

This is an awesome song, just fun to listen to really. The only problem with it is that i bet a lot of people haven't heard it or don't know where to find it. I herd it once and looked all over the place for it. It's A Bonus track on the Life Pursuit Funny Little Frog Single. I just downloaded the song from Itunes, well worth it... Enjoy
