Everything You Ever Wanted

A mom leaving her husband and two children, one of them only five, the other only two. The five-year old was close to her, so she was devastated. She waited for weeks for her mom to come back home, wondering what she had done, why hadn't she just been a better daughter? Then when she sees her mom again, the little girl sees a stranger, someone she didn't know, someone she hated. She then blamed herself for her mom changing--as if she had been bad. It took a long time for her to realize that her mom was lieing when she said that she'd come back home, that they'd be a family. Even longer for the little girl to stop blaming herself.The little girl starts growing up, and everytime she sees her mom another part of her dies, every other weekend untill she has had enough and sees her mom hardly at all. You see, back when the little girl found her mom wasn't there one morning she realized that no one--not even family-would be there, only God would. So as she grew up she made a vow to do everything she could to be perfect; to never be like her mom. To never be that weak.To never make her future kids have to wake up one moring to see that their mom has left them and changed into someone they despised.

That's my story, that's what the song means to me. For someone who has a different story, the song holds a different meaning. But whatever the story, or the meaning, its a shame that anyone has to relate to those lyrics.

If anyone could clarify what the real words are, or if any other mistakes are made, that would be awesome.

I waited ages for this to appear on the radio over at faithrock.org, and when it came, I recorded it on my comp. I just absolutely love this song. It's about the topic of abandonment and not living up to someones standards.

I think the words could be: "it took" but I don't know, it's a little hard to understand. The meaning of the song is obvious and a little cliche but it's still sweet.

i love this song! , to me this song is about a girlfriend, that leaves him, at night kinda "then i woke up to no one, just a picture of Jesus", being a christian, and HN being a christain band i think that this means no matter what happens to you in life, Jesus will always be there for you. . also he is just saying how he tried to be her everything and she just up and left him.. so he just wishes he could go back to when they were happy together... .. i got more to say but i cant put it into words lol anyways thats it :-P , nice job w/ the lyrics guys!

i think it's possibly talking to a girlfriend about a past let down, as 'i fell for that before' is in past tense, and wanting to make something work... i love Hawk Nelsons' lyrics, and the way they often speak in metaphores and make you actualy THINK about it!

I heard a song explanation on the CD singles for the station I work at and Jason said it's written from the perspective of a son to his dad after he left. It's inspired by all the cases of divorce and the hurt it causes that fans obviously talk to them about. Very good song and can be taken many ways.

i think this song is about divorce. his parents split up and he feels like its his fault. ("It took the seasons going by to know its not my fault"). because he felt guilty he tried to be perfect. but he still resented which ever parent that left him. he says "i tried to be everything but you." he didnt want to end up like him/her.
