Here I am in traffic's slow flow
(Where the needle touched down)
Carbon planes draw a cage around the air force base
(where the needle touched down)
My foot on the brake
Its OK to fly low
Over poor spanaway
An eagle swooped down from a semitrailer
Took the name of your town from a sharktooth freighter
The needles the same its recorded and played
As when you left me at the greyhound station the year I moved away
And if I knew then what's so obvious now
You'd still be here baby
My baby
Baby

that's why I never come back here
That's why they spit out my name
Your ex is a part of the battle
Trying to keep me away
The sledge of tectonic fever
The needle has landed again
Let it play

And the needle touched down
The needle has landed
The needle touched down
The needle has landed

The needle touched down from a semitrailer
Took the name of your town from a sharktooth freighter
And if I knew then what's so obvious now
You'd still be here

@ThisIsTrent I think heroin use is definitely one of the meanings here. Neko is pretty open about her parents' drug use when she was growing up, including when she lived in Washington.

He reuses the verse melody from the previous album's "Dirty Little Religion", the topics of the verses are all over the place, and he packs too many words into one line (goes to show...) and too few in another (it's pretty hard to find), and rhymes "Henley Regatta" with "Persona non grata", but gets away with it all as only he could.

Techno Ted
Audioslave
Techno Ted may be a person who caused Chris incredible emotional pain & trepidation as well as moments of peace & happiness but now is removed and awaiting his fate. Darling may be a different person who is also free of him and can live her life free of Ted's tyranny. "In between all the laughing, and daydreams ... lies: a desert of truth" Lies are like a desert or the omission of Truth: Where there were Lies then Truth was absent. The song, "Techno Ted", may be a cathartic celebration of the downfall of this person.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”
