Carry me, Carrie Lyrics
Second Street and Broadway
Sittin' in a doorway
Head held in his hands
Looked to all the world
Like he was prayin'
Foot wrapped in old rag
Bottle in a brown bag
I saw him trying to stand
Then I heard the words that he was sayin'
He said...
Come on, Carrie
Carry me a little farther
Come on, Carrie
Carry me one more mile
I don't know where it's leadin' to
But I know I can make it if I lean on you
So come on, Carrie
Carry me a little
I carried you, now carry me a little
Come on, Carrie, carry me a little while
When he struggled to his feet
And staggered down the street
To the window of a five and dime
He stood and laughed a while at his reflection
And then I heard him shoutin'
Something 'bout a mountain
He could surely climb
If she was only there
To point to right direction
But she ain't, no, but she ain't, no...
He said
Come on, Carrie
Carry me a little farther
Come on, Carrie
Carry me one more mile
I don't know where it's leadin' to
But I know I can make it if I lean on you
So come on, Carrie
Carry me a little
I carried you, now carry me a little
Come on, Carrie
Carry me a little while...
Sittin' in a doorway
Head held in his hands
Looked to all the world
Like he was prayin'
Foot wrapped in old rag
Bottle in a brown bag

Then I heard the words that he was sayin'

Come on, Carrie
Carry me one more mile

I are of the mind. its a lost love..long gone that wrecked a man many years before.... I carry my Carrie (Kathy) with me who died 18 yrs or so ago after a long fight with brain cancer.. I carried her many many times in search of a cure..there wasnt one and she died in my arms looking into my eyes trying to tell me something she never had the strength to.. (try living with that)... we were childhood sweathearts and had almost 20 yrs together starting out with nothing to gaining something in life... I still love her and I still miss her and almost cry a lot still and the frustration and emotion you feel in that song is very real as I too have that.
To me the song is saying this man had nothing left after Carrie went as he was living with her in his mind and still speaking to her (as I do)...he could do anything for her or to get to her even climb that mountain if she were only there to point the right direction (as I could)...as he has lost all direction since losing her..much as I did for 5 yrs after losing my Kathy and still to this day...I live with my regrets as he is with his..
@redly40 Hi, I am so sorry for your loss of your beloved Kathy. This is a song that strikes the human heart to its core. My name is Carrie, I am now 49 years old and my father used to sing this song to me in the 70's when I was a little girl. I did not know then, but I have know now for decades that he was an alcoholic. He loved me with all his heart and he needed me to carry him. I tried to do that,. I was the oldest and most responsible...
I was the oldest and most responsible child of his 4 children. He left us when I was 12. Pretty much never to be heard from again. He passed away about 4 years ago (2014), I had only seen him twice in 20 y\fears. I literally have felt for decades that this song was written about me and my dad. He was in such a sad state, He needed me to lean on, but I was still a little girl. This song will stay with me until my last day, Just offering you a different perspective.. Do not live with regrets, move forward as much as you can.You loved your Kathy, You did what you could for her. Respect what you have done and look to making the rest of your time here peaceful.
This song by Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show (written by Shel Silverstein) talks about how man depends on woman. The man in this song looks exhausted and perhaps given up all hopes about any future. It is woman who would give any hope for him to cling onto life so that he will feel alive. The line 'if I can lean onto you' clearly displays the dependent nature of man especially when fallen to the ground. Dr. Hook's approach to this song is fabulous is different from that of 'The Cover of the Rolling Stone' or even from 'Sylvia's Mother'. My doubt is whether the present seductive womanhood in a highly commercialized context can save us from the human catastrophe that we are now facing. Will she save us or will she traumatize us more and more?
I am glad the comment above me explained this song. I never knew it was a woman's name. I always loved this song because I thought it was about a man asking his creator for a little more help. Thus sng gives me goose bumps. I find it very inspirational
I think Carrie is the name of his love that has passed on. The man says "I carried you", but he is alone making me think he is calling out to her as if to find the strength to keep going on and finding it difficult without her.
