Under a Cloud Lyrics

The summer sun stood up in the sky
and looked back down like it's some kind of eye.
"I've got nothing to hide," I said out loud,
But I feel much better when I'm under a cloud.
So I climbed up the hill of all I've destroyed,
and looked out into the gaping void.
But all I could do was stand & stare,
Though just one more step could have taken me there.
Oh, someday we'll meet beyond the moon -
Someday soon.

Cover art for Under a Cloud lyrics by Quasi

This song is a narrative about someone who is (mostly) unapologetic about his life, in spite of knowing he'll eventually answer to God (the Sun). I.e. "I've got nothing to hide...but I feel much better when I'm under a cloud." Only later, in the second half of the song, he comes close to suicide ("just one more step would have taken me there.")

The underappreciation of this song is almost criminal. I mean, okay, the roxiochord is a little offputting to some. But these lyrics are so tight, they more than make up for it.

I like your interpretation a lot. One of the better interpretations on here for Quasi. Just the idea of .I've got nothing to hide from you, but there's no reason that I should have to be questioning myself all the time'.

This song could be a mission statement for Quasi, with their usually meloncholy lyrics riding over jaunty, bluesy, raucous rhythms, a kind of joyful nihilism.

I’m not sure I agree with misterspaceman’s interpretation of the sun as God, as many other Quasi songs, Sea Shanty, A Case of No Way Out, seem to paint Coomes as an atheist, but I guess it’s possible.

I do agree that Quasi are underappreciated. "featuring Bird" is one of the essential indie-rock records of all-time. Buy it today!
