The Compromise Lyrics

you, you think its cool to be crazy
i say "you want risks? take risks."
there's no point in taking chances

and me, i wouldn't call it a sophomore slump
no i'd say im one step closer to bein' just where i want to be

away from this scene
away from this machine
alright

so meet me in the middle
well come on let's make up a dance
and we'll agree to call it the compromise

step one:
find a partner, grab a pen
and don't you dare ask questions just sign on the dotted line

well, step two-oo-oo:
put your partner behind a desk
where they'll do absolutely nothing
so its your job to dance and smile
the whole time

well don't call it a trend
'cause it's the only way we think to get ahead

so meet me in the middle
well come on lets make up a dance
and we'll agree to call it the compromise

it's no sense in complaining
if it doesn't change our minds
well take me by the hand let's compromise

i can feel your feet touching mine
if you can't dance, there's someone else in line

so meet me in the middle
well come on let's make up a dance
and we'll agree to call it the compromise

there's no sense in complaining
if it doesn't change our minds
well take me by the hand let's compromise

this is all about getting signed to a major record label, in the formats case atlantic, and then being able to really have no control at all about what you are doing. atlantic was trying to COMPROMISE the formats integrity, and lead them by the hand through dog problems.

It's about their break up with atlantic records, they explained it to us at their show two nights ago. kick ass song, great when performed live.... The point of it was they didnt want to conrom and bee a sell out band liek atlantic wanted them to be

Yeah, seeing them perform in DC changed the song for me too. They didn't really explain it outright. But it was implied. And they way Nate sings it, you realize the biting sarcasm. Label's say "we'll agree to call it the compromise" but if you disagree there's "no sense in complaining" because "there's someone else in line" and to a label, you are expendable. But they'll say it with a smile. It's sad seeing passion take second place because they are a business to make money. They are massive promoting machines. What sacrifice are you willing to make to reach the masses?

i was also at that show march 23, but they did not say it was about their split from atlantic, nate did say it was wrote while they were still at atlantic & and that they were less than pleased when the guys handed them this song because it is about what they were going through at the label.

At first I really didnt like this song, just because of the way its sung, sort of in a southernish accent, but now I like it a lot. It sounds like something you would square dance to.

Oh god, have you guys seen the new video for it? I just got an email the other day off "The Livingroom" saying that they're on Oven Fresh on Fuse.

when i first heard this song, i hated it and everytime it came on on the cd i skipped it. but when i saw them last august and he said what it was about-how they were dropped from their record label, how it's all about the music industry's expectations and everything-i was like wow. this song is ingenius. i prefer the earlier acoustic version, i think, but it's still fun, and a great metaphor he made up.

PS. i can't believe any label would drop them. they are surely sad they did now! i'm so glad nate+sam pressed on and made their own label and cd.
