So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
In cold light of morning while everyone is yawning
You're high
In the cold light of morning the party gets boring, you're high
As your skin starts to scratch and wave yesterdays action goodbye
Forget past indiscretions
And stolen possessions
You're high
In the cold light
In the cold light of morning while everyone's yawning
You're high
In the cold light of morning
You're drunk sick from whoring and high
Staring back from the mirrors
A face that you don't recognize
It's a loser a sinner a cock and a dildos disguise
In the cold light
Tomorrow
Tomorrow
Tomorrow
As your skin starts to scratch
And wave yesterdays action goodbye
Forget past indiscretions
And stolen possessions.
You're high
In the cold light of day
Tomorrow's only a king
Whistle [Repeats]
Away
In the cold light of day
You're high
In the cold light of morning the party gets boring, you're high
As your skin starts to scratch and wave yesterdays action goodbye
Forget past indiscretions
And stolen possessions
You're high
In the cold light
In the cold light of morning while everyone's yawning
You're high
In the cold light of morning
You're drunk sick from whoring and high
Staring back from the mirrors
A face that you don't recognize
It's a loser a sinner a cock and a dildos disguise
In the cold light
Tomorrow
Tomorrow
Tomorrow
As your skin starts to scratch
And wave yesterdays action goodbye
Forget past indiscretions
And stolen possessions.
You're high
In the cold light of day
Tomorrow's only a king
Whistle [Repeats]
Away
In the cold light of day

And where exactly did I say Tim Burton was a genius? I simply said that this song had a Tim Burton feel to it. Read properly next time, plzkthx.
I don't see this song as weak at ALL, it drags you right in to the situation and leaves you there. I think people don't like this song because it's different to the rest of the album but it belongs on Meds just like the others.
And singing too deep? No, that is what makes this song even better. It's the rough-morning voice that matches.
And clairey, the 'whistle away' would make more sense if the lyrics were correct (I know I said they were right earlier but there is one word wrong..).. it's 'kettle' not 'king'. So it's like.. tea/coffee in the morning, y'know?
