Shine A Light Lyrics
Don’t talk to me about simple things
There is no such thing
All a man can build is his vision,
and I love my man for trying.
A crime of passion
A cardiac arrest
I hope a little rest
Comes to you
You shine a light,
A light on me
It gets me through
Sister don’t reduce yourself
You gotta find something to love Pidgeon girls got no religion
You are a diamond in the rough
Half done, half done
Here comes a gentleman
He'll put you to the test
I hope a little rest
Comes to you, comes to you.
Cause you shine a light,
A light on me, a light on me
It gets me through
Cause you shine a light,
A light on me, a light on me
It gets me through
Baby’s got the fever
Mama’s washing the white sheets
A man is sleeping naked
With a fire under his feet.
There is no such thing
All a man can build is his vision,
and I love my man for trying.
A cardiac arrest
I hope a little rest
Comes to you
A light on me
It gets me through
You gotta find something to love Pidgeon girls got no religion
You are a diamond in the rough
Here comes a gentleman
He'll put you to the test
I hope a little rest
Comes to you, comes to you.
A light on me, a light on me
It gets me through
Cause you shine a light,
A light on me, a light on me
It gets me through
Mama’s washing the white sheets
A man is sleeping naked
With a fire under his feet.

My favorite song off the album (along with Insectivora). He obviously feels inspired by this person who shines a light on him. However, this person is obviously complex, perhaps having committed a crime that some would interpret as heinous and others as justified. Maybe it's a woman who is a prostitute? Or a woman who kills her husband when she finds him in bed with another woman? Not sure about the line about the man sleeping naked with a fire under his feet though. Any ideas?
It's more of a collection of imagery and ideas outlining the trials, difficulty and beauty of the "human condition" (to coin an overused term), than a narrative story. A crime of passion, a cardiac arrest, are both spontaneous, emotionally intense moments that are life-altering. the very definition of "crisis".
Throughout the tests and struggles and our interactions with other people also being beat down by life we are illuminated and educated to the beauty hidden behind the struggle. the soul of man.
too add: it's the ugliness and trials in life that shine a light on ourselves.
