Skyline Pigeon Lyrics

Turn me loose from your hands
Let me fly to distant lands
Over green fields, trees and mountains
Flowers and forest fountains
Home along the lanes of the skyway

For this dark and lonely room
Projects a shadow cast in gloom
And my eyes are mirrors
Of the world outside
Thinking of the way
That the wind can turn the tide
And these shadows turn
From purple into grey

For just a Skyline Pigeon
Dreaming of the open
Waiting for the day
He can spread his wings
And fly away again
Fly away skyline pigeon fly
Towards the dreams
You've left so very far behind

Just let me wake up in the morning
To the smell of new mown hay
To laugh and cry, to live and die
In the brightness of my day

I want to hear the pealing bells
Of distant churches sing
But most of all please free me
From this aching metal ring
And open out this cage towards the sun

I was so disappointed when I looked up Elton John and didnt see lyrics for skyline pigeon....I mean, come on! Its one of his best-but-least-known songs...anyways, I really really like this song, its so sad but it partly describes how I feel inside....this song also kinda gives me a mental picture of a suicidal person....like they have to commit suicide to be free...kinda morbid, but thats just how it is....not like I'm gonna commit suicide or anything....ahem, getting off the subject...anyways, yeah I really love this song, its one of Eltons best!

A truly beautiful song that speaks of freedom. Kudos to Elton John for this and so many great songs.

Haunting.

Well, I feel this song meant everything to Bernie Taupin...his way of expressing how he felt to finally escape from the Dick James music contract of "chunring 'em out think and fast" (from "Bitter Fingers" lyrics) and before they recorded "Empty Sky" in '69. On the orignal album, EJ played this song on the harpsicord. If you get either the "Rare Masters" cd or the "Don't Shoot Me....." remastered cd, you can hear where EJ recorded a piano verion of this song, which is so much more expressive than the original!!!! (well, personally, this version evokes and extracts more feelings than the original) And, agreeing with "NatilesADDICTION", absolutely one of their best-but-least-known songs!

To me, this song has nothing to do with suicide, but rather, perhaps, of a love or a relationship that is not mutual ("but most of all, please free me from this aching metal ring"). Please let me go and see the world that's out there!

Thanks, NataliesADDICTION for posting the lyrics!

This is the song, not to be morbid or anything, that I want to be played at my funeral.

There will be freedom from whatever troubles you have...Somewhere down the line...

Skyline Pigeon was on the flip side of the Daniel 45 record, and I liked it as much, if not better, as Daniel. I was a young teenager at the time, and to me the song was about being independent and having the freedom to live life on my own terms. I was SO naive. Hearing Skyline Pigeon still uplifts me, and I would be delighted if Elton John sang it in concert.

My Interpretation

@KatnipKat I would love to hear this in concert as well. It got me through many times in my late teens, early 20s when I contemplated suicide. Actually, many of Bernie's lyrics and Elton's music got me through those times. The list is long. And I know I'm not alone.

Brilliantly used at the end of 'The Favourite'. I had never heard it before then. What a song, and what a film.
