A Guiding Light Lyrics
The sun peaked at noon
I watched it hoping it would rise
Just a little higher
And give me a guiding light
A guiding light
I must admit I felt some relief
When the sun began to sink
I mean who really wants to see
Things in blinding white
Blinding white
It grows dark
I feel my way home
Sleep
If you can sleep
Me I'll be staying up
Long into the night
Trying to prove wrong
All the statements I made
All the statements I just made
A guiding light
You were born in the middle of the night
What better time for a guiding light
I watched it hoping it would rise
Just a little higher
And give me a guiding light
A guiding light
When the sun began to sink
I mean who really wants to see
Things in blinding white
Blinding white
I feel my way home
Sleep
If you can sleep
Long into the night
Trying to prove wrong
All the statements I made
What better time for a guiding light

My interpretation is this is about a conversation/argument that he didn't want to have, probably with a girlfriend, the sort of conversation where raw, painful honesty comes out and it takes the whole day.
The hoped for guiding light is the insight into himself/the relationship, which doesn't arrive to his ultimate relief. After all, who really wants to see things in blinding white?
Then the aftermath, regret and self doubt? "Trying to prove wrong all the statements i made" sounds like he regrets being so honest and the pain it caused and so starts to try to explain how what he said wasn't true.
I mean, who really wants to see things in blinding light?
He was granted a guiding light and was shown the truth. Now he wishes only for it not to be true. But this cannot be.
