but i think this song is about being in love with someone who is too needy and needs you to be there for them when you need someone who can do some of the fighting themselves. it hurts cuz you wanna help them but you're not strong enough and you need to take care of youself.

the paper in the hand thing paints a nice picture in my mind.. that reminds me of the movie Titanic.

On the contrary, I think this song is about someone who needs that special someone to understand that they need help and in fact are acting as the needy side... "Now i should run outside I should be running after you I should need to cry But i dont i stay Cos theres a little bit inside me that likes this pain" About someone who doesn't feel they are in the right spot at the right time and everything is just wrong but there's nothing they can really do about it except maybe be held in the warm comfort of someone else.

yep. this song is about a relationship where both people need eachother however missy or whoever it is is exerting herself helping the other person when also what she needs is that person to help her. i totally get htis song!

I went to her concert and she played this song. She said it was about a friend that wrote her a letter saying that they were drifting apart and that he didnt want their friendship to end.

Aww, i read what tameeka said. That's so cute. I thought she was the one in the song singing "hold me tight" so i thought she was really needy when she sayd "i should run outside... after you" AWW cute.

this is my favorite missy higgins song... i always interpreted as being about someone who is in a relationship that they know they need to get out of, but while the narrator needs to get the other person out of her life, it is so much easier to just let them "hold me tight"

My interpretation:

I always thought this song was about a quiet, shy guy that has been in love with her for a very long time. He has been dropping hints forever (the notes that say "hold me tight") and she just disregards them. On one hand, she hopes it's blank, meaning she's hoping he's given up. On the other hand:

The "pointless flares" are the signals he's given her, the little ways he's told her that he loves her.

I think this song is about someone who having some problems in their life but won't let anyone in. Their friend desperately wants to help but they can't get close enough. So they're begging that the person just need them and hold them tightly because all this trying is killing them but they don't want to lose the relationship. So basically, a plea to be let in to a troubled person's life so they can help them.
