Somewhere in Between Lyrics

We went up to the top of the highest hill
And stopped
Still

It was just so beautiful
It was just so beautiful
It was just so beautiful

This is where the shadows come to play
'Twixt the day
And night
Dancing and skipping
Along a chink of light

Somewhere in between
The waxing and the waning wave
Somewhere in between
What the song and silence say
Somewhere in between
The ticking and the tocking clock
Somewhere in a dream between
Sleep and waking up
Somewhere in between
Breathing out and breathing in
Like twilight is neither night nor morning

Not one of us would dare to break
The silence
Oh how we have longed
For something that would
Make us feel soâ?¦

Somewhere in between
The waxing and the waning wave
Somewhere in between
The night and the daylight
Somewhere in between
The ticking and the tocking clock
Somewhere in between
What the song and silence say

Somewhere in between
Breathing out and breathing in

Goodnight sun
Goodnight sun

Goodnight mum

The meaning of this song become obvious when you consider the context. The entire CD "A Sky Of Honey" on her album "Aerial" is telling a story, firstly of awakening, then the artist who paints on a pavement in the day, then it starts to rain and makes his painting look like a sunset, and then it starts telling the story of how the sun sets, becomes the night, and then the day again.

"Somewhere in between" is the link in that chain that's about sunset.

The play on the words at the end where the vocals say goodnight to the Sun, and Kate's son Bertie answers "Goodnight mum", it a recurring theme in the album. Bertie's dialogue in "Prelude" also represents his role as the sun creating the day.
