Why? Lyrics
Why? Why'd you do that?
You shouldn't have done that
If I told you once, I told you three times
You'll get your punishment when you
Show me your crimes
It's not a spell or a curse you put on me
Or the way you smile so tenderly
But how I wish it was your temper you were throwing
Damn you for being so easygoing
I thought that time would tell
My sins would provoke you to raise some hell
Not a chance
Whatever happened to fiery romance
Oh how I wish it was those dishes you were throwing
Damn you for being so easygoing
No, don't give me that line
Don't try to tell me inaction is not a crime
Can't you see what kind of seeds you're sowing?
Damn you for being so easygoing
You shouldn't have done that
If I told you once, I told you three times
You'll get your punishment when you
Show me your crimes
Or the way you smile so tenderly
But how I wish it was your temper you were throwing
Damn you for being so easygoing
My sins would provoke you to raise some hell
Whatever happened to fiery romance
Oh how I wish it was those dishes you were throwing
Damn you for being so easygoing
Don't try to tell me inaction is not a crime
Can't you see what kind of seeds you're sowing?
Damn you for being so easygoing

And not just physically, but trying to drag a response ANY response out of the object of your affections. This includes just getting them to get angry to prove that they have feelings.
"damn you for being so easygoing" indeed.
the emotional abuse of indifference
My favorite Andrew Bird song. The emotion and rawness of the way he sings/performs this are amazing.
I think it's about being with someone you're completely crazy for but they aren't really doing anything about it. Like, when you're sitting next to your love on the couch and you're completely ready to tear their clothes off but they're just watching the TV and laughing at you.
you know?
So. Wonderful.
An amazing song really. It makes me shudder every time I hear it. To me it is more like you are crazy about someone, and you are fine with him, but you realize that's only because he is a good person and gets on well with you, that's all. Like it's a confusion betweem friendship, good manners, and love.
j.enslow got it.
this song is sooo sexy.
god, I wish I could hear this song live. The first time I heard it, I thought it was the sexiest thing ever. Then, I looked up some youtube vids an man, that Bird is damn emotional. But in a good way, you can see his whole entire body get into the song, where you feel like the person is in the room, amongst the audience. You kind of just want him, right there. Ha. Or maybe that's just me.
about two years ago i went to see bird perform at northwestern university, his alma mater. when he introduced "Why" he explained that it was his roommate in college who he wrote the song after. his roommate was apparently quite a partier (bird of course wasn't), and one time they began arguing about it. His roommate actually said the words to bird, "damn you for being so easygoing."
TELL me this isn't Sexy (yes, with a capital S) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZBoZ0sUT3k
The live performance of this song is almost obscene - Bird just lets go and his muse fully possesses him in entirety...it is amazing to behold.

I know. It is amazing to watch it live. It it almost erotic. I know that sounds weird, but that's how I felt when I saw him perform it live. It was just completely sexy.

JasonBunting is not kidding. I actually saw Andrew Bird live last night, and this song was completely out of control. He started arguing with himself, and his whole body took on the stance of someone desperate, reaching out his hands to the audience and asking them, "Can't you see what kind of seeds yo're sowing?"
