On The Way Home Lyrics

When the dream came,
I held my breath with my eyes closed.
I went insane,
Like a smoke ring day when the wind blows.
Now I won't be back till later on,
If I do come back at all,
But you know me, and I miss you now.

In a strange game,
I saw myself as you knew me.
When the change came,
And you had a chance to see through me.
Though the other side is just the same,
You can tell my dream is real,
Because I love you, can you see me now.

Though we rush ahead to save our time,
We are only what we feel.
And I love you, Can you feel it now?

i always heard it was a kiss-off to the buffalo springfield. and stephen stills in particular. very emotionally powered song. classic.

Shakey...I "Super Love-It".. And you're correct This was Neil's (Parting), Gift to the "Springfield" before leaving the Group.. Their Producer thought that Neil's voice was too Whiney (for Top-40 Airplay), and had Richie Furay sing it.. (I Like-It-Like Dat). I thought that it was "Top-10" Worthy and compared it to "Airplay-Appealing" Groups like the "Box-Tops" with that "Tight" Rhythm and Horn-Section. And the Strings, (Truly a Nice Touch)..

I prefer the 4 Way Street CSNY version - Neil sang it acoustically with CSNY, and as a ballad, whereas Richie Furay sang it with the Springfield

It's about an experiance that brought him alot closer to someone, probably tripping on acid or smoking weed together, and now they understand each other really well. The last quote is great and pretty self-explanitory.

I've always heard it was a kiss off or F-you to the band and Stephen Stills in particular. Neil was supposed to sing it, but he quit the band, again, so Richie Furay sang it. That view of the lyrics would make since, because it was one of only a few songs that Richie Furay brought with him to Poco in live concerts. Poco still performs it to this day with Rusty Young singing it when Richie's not with the band. And then Neil played his ballad version of the song live for years...

Sad song indeed. It's about as melancholy as a Sunday afternoon. You know where the weekend is ending and you go back to reality whether it's school or work.I hear a lot of "Goodbye" in this song. A goodbye that is not on good terms.

not sure about that, brilliant song tho, to be honest prefer the Springfield version to those on the various Neil Young live releases
