Couch Lyrics
pnina wore a blanket reading books on the couch
pnina's legs were folded fingers clasped to her mouth
she thought
she'd go to sleep and dream
in photographs
her brother josh in his pajamas lay on the floor
playing chess he knew what all the pieces were for
he lay there
losing to himself
on purpose
they thought in languages nobody understood
they hadn't eaten they were trying to be good
instead
despite their pains they had become
perfection

she thought
she'd go to sleep and dream
in photographs
playing chess he knew what all the pieces were for
he lay there
losing to himself
on purpose
they hadn't eaten they were trying to be good
instead
despite their pains they had become
perfection

I keep saying that every song is my favorite. I was going to say that about this one. But nvm.
I can think of a million different interpretations, but the one that I can really believe is that a lot of kids aren't understood by their parents or a lot of people close to them. They think too differently.
This creates a lot of problems because, naturally, people want to be understood, right? Parents and others want to understand, but see it like, " Well this kid doesn't think right. There must be something I am doing wrong." So they put the child on more restrictions and basically punish the kid for not being like everyone else. Then the kid refrains from trying to talk to people about stuff that matters because it might end up badly for them, and it just creates a lot of uneeded drama. But it still hurts the kid because that separates them from people they care about.
Same thing with a person in society. If they dont act and think a certain way, they must be crazy or stupid.
I see this as the complete opposite. It's just a description of perfect moment in time. The children are peaceful (I imagine they have the house to themselves, which is why they haven't eaten), Pnina is reading and Josh is playing chess with himself. They seem bright and happy, I don't see any hint of restrictions or punishment.

I just think this one is really lovely. And for some reason, I always picture Rachael and Zeke Kinski from Neighbours when I hear this song o___0
