this is my favorite song off their new album. when i heard it i knew immediately. i think this about how easily someone can fall for someone, and how that feeling isnt always shared, that feeling of something special. however, he looks back and realizes it doesnt mean much, all those little things he thought were special doesnt count for much. its about how relationships can easily start and end, and sometimes you cant do anything but wait.
This is such a passionate song. I believe (because of the lyric and also an interview with TSM) that it's about the instant someone's heart is broken...when they start to realize (whether it's true or not) that the weight they held on the relationship was too much. This song has such a feeling of being lost and confused. It hits so close to home for anyone I play TSM for.
Recovering from a severed relationship, the author is trying to get used to the idea of being alone. It doesn't quite register. He has invested so much love and so much time in a relationship that he and his lover thought would last eternally, so the notion that it could just end as quickly as it started seems so strange. How could all of those promises and words of devotion not mean anything if they weighed so heavy at the time. "It don't mean much" is not so much a declaration by the author as it is an attempt to grasp the idea that the other party is so ready to call it quits. A similar song to look up would be "I'm Not in Love" by 10cc.
What strikes me is the triumphant feel of the keyboard over whats typically thought of as heart-wrenching subject matter. It makes me think maybe ending a long-term relationship isn't all that bad.
