the music in this song is just so intense. you really get this haunting and completely dead feeling of what the father must be feeling.
the father is just at a point where he probably just doesn't care, or isn't able to care. he's unhappy and his wife is unhappy because of it. she takes her daughter and leaves him to find someone else.

the definition of the doldrums is an area around the eqautor where there are very little winds and lots of rain. Could be a symbollic gesture that he just isnt there anymore because he got trapped where there is no wind. He doesnt want to be, buts hes depressed and trapped in it.
