Paper Bag Lyrics
She don't run from the sun no more
She boxed her shadow and she won
Said, "I can see you laugh through these bottle caps
And this wire around my neck ain't there for fun"
But someday we'll all be old
And I'll be so damn beautiful
Meanwhile, I'll hide my head
Here in this paper bag
Cause if I can't see you
Then you can't see me
And it'll be okay
Fly little bee away
To where there's no more rain
And I can be me
Yeah, they talk about her
She smiles like she's so tough
She says, "Hey can you talk a little louder?
I don't think my heart is broken enough"
But someday we'll all be old
And I'll be so damn beautiful
Meanwhile I'll hide my head
Here in this paper bag
Cause if I can't see you
Then you can't see me
And it'll be okay
Fly little bee away
To where there's no more rain
And I can be me
Somedays I wade in the indigo
Singing that song on the radio
I blame these puddles on the rain
You know I gotta keep these cheeks dry today
Gotta keep my cheating strategy
And baby I'm gonna have it made
But someday we'll all be old
And I'll be so damn beautiful
Meanwhile, I'll hide my head
Here in this paper bag
Cause if I can't see you
Then you can't see me
And it'll be okay

I think she's referencing "No Rain" by Blind Melon in the section: "Singing that song on the radio I blame these puddles on the rain You know I gotta keep these cheeks dry today Gotta keep my cheating strategy And baby I'm gonna have it made"
It just reminds me of "ya know I'd like to keep my cheeks dry today so stay with me and I'll have it made" from the Blind Melon song. And there's a lot of references to rain. Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but I just thought it was kinda ironic.
She is. The lyrics are the same in both songs.

I think it's really the least deep of all her songs, but also one of my favs. The girl doesn't fit in, everyone makes fun of her, but soon she'll grow up, and they'll all see how beautiful she really is. Meanwhile, she'll hide and ignore them, just waiting to turn into a butterfly. she just keeps smileing, because she knows that somday they'll be old and ugly, and she'll be beautiful.
I think this is the ode to adolesence, you know, the whole braces and bottlecaps. I think it's her teenage self telling everyone that someday she'll be "so damn beautiful." I love this song, a perosonal fav. on the album!
I agree that its a song about adolesence and the awkwardness that most people go through. I love this song so much it always makes me smile :)
the blind melon reference totally works, northofgravity... if you've seen the video, it features an overweight girl with thick glasses (the whole "see you laugh through these bottle caps"/coke-bottle glasses reference) who wears a horrific bumblebee tutu (the "fly little bee away" line in the chorus). between the references to the other song's lyrics and the references to the video, it totally connects...
After Hering This Song On The Radio. I NOw Like It Better Than Breathe (2AM). This Song Is About Somone Who Does Not Fit In and Want To Hide From Every One. Maby They Look Different Or Have A Handicap.
I was wondering what people thought the line
"And this wire around my neck ain't there for fun" meant. I understand the bottlecaps to be glasses, but I don't get this. Could it be headgear for braces?

Anna Nalick talking about Paper Bag on her website:
"I wrote all of them all by my lonesome...except for Paper Bag in which I obviously borrowed one or two Blind Melon lyrics "keep these cheeks dry today" and "I'm gonna have it made" ( I had personal permission of course)". So the Blind Melon theories are correct!
Paper Bag is one of my favorite Anna songs. Recently, things have started getting to me - people mocking me, joking around a little cruelly. Even though the song wasn't written exactly for my situation, if I listen to it with that understanding of it, it really applies well. I love "Someday we'll all be old and I'll be so damn beautiful" - it just has this "I'll show them" attitude, taking comfort in knowing that someday this won't matter.
