The moon is not only beautiful
It is so far away
The moon is not only ice cold
It is here to stay
When I lay me down
Will you still be around
When they put me six feet underground
Will the big bad beautiful you be around
Everyone says they know you
Better than you know who
Everyone says they own you
More than you do
When I lay me down
Will you still be around
When they put you six feet underground
Will the big bad beautiful moon still be around
Cuz the moon is not only beautiful
It is so far away
The moon is not only ice cold
It is here to stay
Everyone says they know you
Better than you know who
Everyone says they own you
More than you do
It is so far away
The moon is not only ice cold
It is here to stay
Will you still be around
When they put me six feet underground
Will the big bad beautiful you be around
Better than you know who
Everyone says they own you
More than you do
Will you still be around
When they put you six feet underground
Will the big bad beautiful moon still be around
It is so far away
The moon is not only ice cold
It is here to stay
Better than you know who
Everyone says they own you
More than you do

this is not a sad song, not about heartbreak or anything of a sort.
"When I lay me down Will you still be around When they put me six feet underground Will the big bad beautiful you be around"
"six feet underground" - metaphorical for death. she wants to know if this person is going to be around when she dies.
no matter how cold and distant this person may seem, she still loves them and knows they will be around.
Ah, it is a sad song... But not because it is about relationships breaking or anything, rather it's because it speaks of death. It relates the cycle of the moon with the cylce of life. Will I die before you, or you before me? Will you be there when I die? Or can I only hope for the moon to be there? Who knows. Wil love always be around between us? It seems ike it comes and goes like the moon - always there, but it's also out of reach and it can never be taken for granted. And that's what every one seems to do: "says they own you" Though sometimes I think that "you" is not at all about another person, but is simply refering to the moon. It's a touching ambiguity.
I don't know why, but this part...
The moon is not only beautiful It is so far away The moon is not only ice cold It is here to stay
has always made me think of being trapped in a loveless relationship. You feel like you want it to work, but it feels like the other person is distant. That person is cold towards you, but you know that because of habit/wanting to try/maybe love on your part the relationship won't end.
this makes me think of a guy i dated who i think is a fairly easily found type - he's known by many, flirts with many, make many feel they have his fullest love and friendship.. and when a person tried to actually get one on one with him and see who he is beyond that... it is found all that wonderfulness is really just a show.
fuck.
this song breaks me all over.
agree with inmate :)
..............................is it just me or does the music sound like stairway to heaven?
agree'd inmate, the ambiguity of who "you" is makes this song much much better. This is really good poetry.
I agree, in music or literature the "you" is always obscure and undefined. Ugh...

This song is pure bliss. I am greatful to have been turned on to them! Most suiting and relevant, must say. The moon is not only beautiful...it is Ice Cold!
One of my favorite Cat Power songs. Many people find it to be morbid and depressing. I don't, personally. I think the "moon" represents that which is divine or sacred to someone. And how that, even though we're all eventually going to die and lose everything, that which is sacred/divine to someone always perseveres and is beyond the cycles of birth and death. Kind of like a connection between the cycles of the moon and the cycles of life and death. That's my 2 cents, anyway. Beautiful Song.
