Takin' It To The Streets Lyrics
You don't know me but I'm your brother
I was raised here in this living hell
You don't know my kind in your world
Fairly soon the time will tell
You, telling me the things you're gonna do for me
I ain't blind and I don't like what I think I see
Takin' it to the streets
Takin' it to the streets
Takin' it to the streets
Takin' it to the streets
Take this message to my brother
You will find him everywhere
Wherever people live together
Tied in poverty's despair
You, telling me the things you're gonna do for me
I ain't blind and I don't like what I think I see
Takin' it to the streets
Takin' it to the streets
Takin' it to the streets
Takin' it to the streets
I was raised here in this living hell
You don't know my kind in your world
Fairly soon the time will tell
You, telling me the things you're gonna do for me
I ain't blind and I don't like what I think I see
Takin' it to the streets
Takin' it to the streets
Takin' it to the streets
You will find him everywhere
Wherever people live together
Tied in poverty's despair
You, telling me the things you're gonna do for me
I ain't blind and I don't like what I think I see
Takin' it to the streets
Takin' it to the streets
Takin' it to the streets

What a shock but a delight to be the first on this website to comment on this song. I think the meaning is fairly straightforward. But from what I have gathered it was written by the Doobie Brothers piano player and lead singer Michael McDonald. He partly got inspiration from his sister Maureen who had written a college essay. The line, "Take this message to my brother,” comes straight from the essay. It is about living in the poverty and despair in the inner city. It addresses people who live in much better circumstances: "You don't know my kind in your world").
