Methods Of Dance Lyrics

Here's a new design
The cut and style you know so well
Spins across the floor

It's the same routine
Just one last word before you go
Why should I ask for more?

Then out of the the blue
You are here by me

(Moving) taking my chance
(Learning) methods of dance
Methods of dance

It's such a price to pay
You sense the doubt inside my mind
But never ask me why

No second chances now
I could be sure if I were to live
At your speed of life

(Moving) taking my chance
(Learning) methods of dance
Methods of dance

(Moving) taking my chance
(Learning) methods of dance
Methods of dance

I always thought the lyric was about trying to negotiate a romantic relationship - a couple who can't quite make something permanent work - one partner or other leaving then returning, she is more extrovert than him, lives at a faster speed of life - but he wants to overcome his doubts, take his chance and learn a method to successfully take part in the dance of the relationship.

Sylvian often started with a title (which is why Quiet Life has so many titles from movies 'Halloween', 'Alien', 'Despair'. On this track he saw a documentary about choreography on the BBC which was called, you guessed it, 'Methods of Dance'.

Beautiful and sophisticated rock from the wonderful Japan is bursting with melody, and I love the ennui of David Sylvian's rather aloof vocals. The lyrics principally offer a mood of vague introspection, but that does work.

A wonderful band, who still sound a little bit of the future, over thirty years on.
