Its from the movie Eddie and the Cruisers. In it, one of the characters, 'word man' wrote this song. Presumably it was about Eddie (singer)'s girlfriend. Word man had a thing for her but of coarse she wouldnt ever know. And he felt bad/mean for liking her when she was with Eddie but he just had no control over his actions or feelings around her.

It's about her having, like everyone else, a bad side to her. She's wondering what'll happen if the guy she's with sees it, because she's scared he'll "run away" and asks "can you love me, even with my dark side?" She's saying you need to keep working on her and looking past her flaws and dark side because underneath all that she's not so bad. She calls herself "a diamond from black dust", because she has a rough exterior but it's just on the outside. It's really a great song.
