Good Lord.. Such a great song. Has been my favorite song of all times since I heard it.

I coarsly interpret this song as a guy who has hurt a girl he likes/loves so much in a horrible way, a way he didn't really meant to lead her to, and this mistake's destroying this girl so hardly it's touching him deeply.

Or maybe he left her, but he didn't meant to..

I think this means that he went to war and "you" was very affected by him leaving
