The song is obviously named after the Warhol film, but oddly, it doesn't have much to do with the movie, and has a lot more to do with the 15th century Dutch modern-devotion-Catholic spiritual guide that gave Warhol the name.
I have no idea if this is intentional or not, but the song criticizes 20th century Christianity pretty much the same way Kempis and friends criticized 15th century Christianity. The traditional idea of "imitation of Christ", going back to at least St. Francis of Assisi, is that the most important thing for a good Christian to do is to live as much like Jesus as possible, to serve as an example to others. But, according to both Kempis and Butler, these outward Christlike signs are just a meaningless show, and ultimately drag Christ down to our level instead of raising ourselves to his.
Of course for the Devotio Moderna, the remedy was to withdraw from society and become totally anonymous, contemplating the eucharist and the crucifixion internally, while for the Psychedelic Furs, there's no remedy; your god is you, and he's as fallen and ridiculous as you, and what else should you expect?

Will someone PLEASE, PLEASE post the lyrics to the "Peel Session" of this song. You can hear it on Youtube, but the lyrics to that version, which are vastly different than the studio version, are nowhere to be found.
