Hey, I'm so glad people are starting these posts. There are a couple corrections I'm pretty sure of:

I think this is done pretty deliberately to link this song to the first song (The Devil's Takin' Names), and give the record that Great Story-esque cohesion. Thanks again for the post.

Not too sure about some of it, but yeah.

Although this new album just doesn't do it for me as their previous two, this song is simply amazing.. best one on the record.

Btw. the song title is a reference to a Judy Blume's book "Are you there, God? It's me, Margaret."

I agree, this is my favorite song on Oh Calcutta too. It's about a relationship ending and the feeling of total directionlessness that comes with it.

Don't judge too quickly. This was the first song that jumped out at me as well. But by now every song on this album is amazing. The Greatest Story Ever Told is one of my favorite all time albums, and I thought this album would be good, but not not as impactful or fresh. Basically I was expecting a Greatest Story two.

Boy did I underestimate this amazing, amazing band. This album is completely different from the last two, and as I listen to these songs over and over, I'm almost to the point where I wan to say that this is better than Greatest Story. This might be the best album they've ever put out, hell it might be one of the best albums I've ever listened to.

This might sound like hyperbole, but give all these songs a chance.

R2k, I definitely agree with you that this album is so amazing. after I listened to it about 3 times, every single song grew on me. it was the same thing with greatest story, it took a couple days for it all to really sink in. but now i think this album is just as unique and great as their others.

this song is sweet. at first, unlike other people, it was my least favorite because it just didn't sound like them. but again, after a couple listens, i "got it."

*ALSO, i really think the title is a pun. especially since some of the song is talking about a girls body, and is probably about sex. i confess i've never read judy blume, but one of their other songs was once titled as a joke, "Where are you going wher ehave you been?" and was a joyce carol oates story. so take the judy blume reference with a grain of salt.

It sounds like I am on the opposite side for this song. When I first heard it, I really enjoyed it. I thought it seemed like a different type of song for the Larry Arms, and it wasn't a bad thing. I like the dual vocals, and some of the lyrics just say so much.

The song is correctly titled "Are You There Yet, Margaret? It's Me, God"

Such an excellent song. One of my favorite Larry Arms songs, right behind "The Dancing Machine" and "Cut It Up." Fucking great to sing along to.

I totally agree with R2K and bling. Oh! Calcutta! is every bit as good as Greatest Story (if not better?) The songs on here are more complex and mature than the Lawrence Arm's earlier stuff, but I think they lack the infectious energy of classics like "The Dancing Machine" and "The Corpse of Our Motivations"
