Jewels and Bullets Lyrics

Every word they sling you hits like your folks have never been kind
And the jewels on your apron could use some calamine
Ugly girls and pit-faced boys all hunch and join in the line
Got the shoe that you lived in
And the towel that you dried in
And there's a drink you can drown in
So choose a blanket to die in

Spill a drink on his front and salsa on the plans for a mall and high rise
'Cause there's only so much of string that patrons can pull and unwind

You're the shoe that they lived in
And you're the towel that they dried in
And there's a drink you can drown in
They got the blanket you'll die in

Choke on the towel you can die in

According to Tim, he used to frequent this one cafe, and he would often observe this one waitress who would cop a lot of abuse from patrons but somehow still keep going. The "jewels and bullets bit" is a reference to Anastasia Romanov and the jewels woven into her gown that allegedly saved her, and how this waitress at the cafe must've had some in her apron that stopped her from falling apart after all that abuse.

this is one of my fave you am i songs, just always loved that guitar riff at the end.. because of this i never gave much thought to the meaning, though the quasi-chorus seemed to indicate being destitute, but now i read the entire lyrics, i realise i have to give it some further thought....

a user from you am i's forum enlightened me with this quote of tim's:

"It's said that when Anastasia Romanov was 'executed' at Yekaterinburg, that Jewels woven into her gown deflected the bullets meant to kill her. A coffee shop in Castle Hill, NSW is a long way from Yekaterinburg, but some folks can let no asshole's comments get to them"

Good to see a familiar name here politics! I've heard the Anastasia reference a few times over the years.
