Streetlights Lyrics
We can go and walk in the darkness
get relief at each
streetlight
I don't know how much it would cost us
probably more than I've spent in my whole life
on
these silly ideas that waste more time than I had to
loose when I woke up this morning
seems like I've
got so much more to loose now than I ever had before
little beanie-bean with the calculator keys
can he add
it all up, make it all make sense to me
I've got no idea
how much more time
I've got left if I can't get my mind
right
the simplest little melody has got me all tangled up
in knots
we can go and walk in the morning
we don't
need streetlights just a new start
not paralyzed by
appearances with big ideas and just way to smart
to walk around on the surface when there's an ocean
just beneath it's blue-green smile
all the while nothing
stopping me from jumping in and sinking fast
I'll sing
you to sleep first
get relief at each
streetlight
I don't know how much it would cost us
probably more than I've spent in my whole life
on
these silly ideas that waste more time than I had to
loose when I woke up this morning
seems like I've
got so much more to loose now than I ever had before
little beanie-bean with the calculator keys
can he add
it all up, make it all make sense to me
I've got no idea
how much more time
I've got left if I can't get my mind
right
the simplest little melody has got me all tangled up
in knots
we can go and walk in the morning
we don't
need streetlights just a new start
not paralyzed by
appearances with big ideas and just way to smart
to walk around on the surface when there's an ocean
just beneath it's blue-green smile
all the while nothing
stopping me from jumping in and sinking fast
I'll sing

ok, but genuinely, it seems to me that it might be open to interpretation, and could possibly be for a brother, just my humble opinion.
written for his son
you think so? could it also not be a brother maybe? i'm not saying ur wrong, but it might be open to discussion.
Its about his son...he said so.
The lyric author's interpretation is just one aspect of the song's meaning... for every person who heard the song but never read or was told that "it's about his son", each one of them has their own thoughts on the song's meaning. Generally there's one or two or three main groups of interpretations, depending on how obvious the song is, but I don't see this song as very obvious at all, so I'd question the idea of diffidently and imperiously proclaiming its meaning to be described completely by the four words "written for his son". I think it could most certainly be for a brother (in fact, that interpretation makes more sense to me than the son interpretation).
My own first thoughts on hearing this song (my first time hearing it was a few years ago) is this:
It seems to me a song about frustration, hope, striving, uncertainty, the perspective of age versus youth. A man feeling pent-up, driven to extremes, overwhelmed by life, keenly aware of the constant trickling passage of time, emotionally wrought at every turn, reaching for simplicity and a certain purity in life in hopes of finding a way through the chaos...
Of course, that's just me. Everyone (including Mr. Votolato himself) will have their own interpretation.
