City Of Devils Lyrics

Man once sang to me
Look at you saving the world on your own
And I wonder how things gonna be
Cos the time here it passes so slow
In a city of devils we live
A city of devils we live
Find somebody to learn
Boy you gotta love someone more than yourself
I can feel the fire of the city lights burn
It's hard to find angels in hell

Chorus

Flying alone I
Feel like I don't belong and I,
Can't tell righy from the wrong, why,
Have I been here so long

In a city of devils we live
A city of devils we live

Questions I can't seem to find
To the answers I already have
And you can't see the sky here tonight
So I guess I can't make my way back

Chorus

What if I wanted you here right now
Would you fall in the fire burn me down
If I wanted you here right now
Would you fall in the fire burn me down
If I wanted you here right now...

In a city of devils we live
In a city of devils we live
A city of devils we live
In a city of…

Chorus

I don't belong
Don't belong
I've been here too long
Too long

In this song, Yellowcard expresses their sense of isolation in Los Angeles. Los Angeles, also known as the "City of Angels", To Yellowcard, its quite the contrary, "City of Devils" They express their isolation through the last lines, "I don't belong", "I've been here too long"

Personal Note: The way Key writes the song, to me it may be a conflict between music genres, rap and rock/pop. LA is comprised of many african americans, moreso than florida, which leads me to them being 'the only savior' , "Look at you saving the world on your own".

The Chorus only further supports my theory of this being about getting away from LA

I hate the fact that this album got dogged on by so many critics and that the general opinion was that it was a dissapointment, because it seems as if they didnt even take the time to listen to the songs. Yeah, not the typical Yellowcard we all are familiar with, but just because it's different dosent mean it's bad. To me, this whole album was very symbolic and had deep meaning. This song is the perfect example of that.

The title alone is incredibly clever, and the entire song is almost as if Ryan snaps back at someone defending Los Angeles. It's no secret that he dosent like it, and vents his frustrations of living in the fake society that Los Angeles is. He has trouble making friends there because everyone is so caught up in themselves "Boy you gotta love someone more than yourself...it's hard to find angels...". A very simple message, he could easily just say "I hate Los Angeles" and leave it at that. But instead, you get an incredibly well-thought out and well-written song telling you why.

And that is the hidden greatness behind Lights and Sounds as a whole album. If only those "experts" and "critics" took the time to pay attention.

No, i'm not racist but thats my theory on the song, anyone else care to contribute? i welcome it, i think my city of devils/angels comparison is correct though

I think that the angels/devils part theory is correct. "Time passes so slow." He wants to go back home. "It's hard to find angels..." He needs someone to love?

The race thing has nothing to do with it. I think the angels/devils thing is right, too. I think they feel like they don't fit in the puzzle that is LA. They were thrown in so quickly, and now all anyone around them cares about is the money that they make, not them, and they want to go back to where they feel like nothing else matters but them being them.

yall ever think that mabye the "what if i wanted you here right now" part refers to the old guitarist ben harper because they were best friends he had recently left?

I think asmidler has the right idea about the song!

and also I just love the line "It's hard to find angels in hell"

:)

Yellowcardr0ck, did it ever occur to you that LP himself is black? ;)

The race point aside, I think you're right. Then again, the entire album is about getting out of LA. I like the idea of not being able to see the sky at night, and the "city lights burn" - it goes back to Lights and Sounds.
