Sure Thing Falling Lyrics
I'm glad I understand the highway thing now, but does this song not smack of an affair, illicit or ill fated relationship to any of you? This is how I see it:
You ride in silence because HE WILL NOT LET GO - the imagined girl who is sung about, and her boyfriend who won't let go of her, even though she wants to be with the singer.
So as for 'heroes and crooks', the singer from Yellowcard is the either the metaphorical hero or crook, as in one respect, if the girl is leaving the guy for him, then "one of them saves you from this" e.g. he saves her from the unhappy relationship, or "the other one steals you" e.g. steals you away.
Another bit I noticed was: He could take you all the way to Church this time... As in, you could get married, but in reality the relationship is a lie.
'Sure things fall' in this context means to me, you think you'll end up happily ever after, married with 2.4 children, but maybe that's not the case, because it's too obvious and expected, because all sure things fall. Does anyone else see this in the song?
A little late with my interpretation, but I just wanted to add this.
I think the ending is the key to the song. The whole song is, like the title suggests, having a sure thing fall apart. The "I've been up late writing books" I think refers to just life as a book, and with each day you write a new chapter. The heroes and crooks refer to the types of events that either help or hurt the realization of your dreams.
"All of the places I looked...pictures I took" refers to all the dreams you've had. Everything you plan for your life, the stages are the "pictures" and the one that is "here with me now" refers to looking in the mirror, the picture of who you are today. It's when you look in the mirror that you realize that you are who you are, and all of those dreams and expectations you had, all of those "sure things", may not have been as sure as you once thought.
The other parts of the song I think, like others have said, tell his story of a girl that is with someone else, and he is writing how her decision will add a chapter to his own book. If she leaves the guy for him, he'll write a chapter about a hero, but if she stays with the other guy, he'll write about the crook who took away his "sure thing," one more picture thrown away.
Thanks for this, it is the best interpretation I have read and it is quite a nice perspective to think about.

Dude, your turning into a xcore fanboy, lol. Not a bad song, seems a lil commerical but I like the backbeat so its all good.
Yellowcardrock pretty much summed it up...but it's not awkward it's 1-4...1-4 is some main route in jacksonville.
Im not 100 percent sure if this is right but everyother site I have looked at for this song has that lyric at...."But don't forget you summed it up in 50 lines" Every time I hear this song I hear that line diffrent. It is a wonderful song either way.
I hear lines too...ohh and on the 1-4 thing its either "off 1-4" or" on 1-4"...but I know for sure it's 1-4 :)
yeah i was trying so hard to hear awkward couldnt get it
He says "you're drivin' I-4 as you make you're way back home..." as in interstate 4 which runs through central florida, which is where they are originally from
