Of course it's a metaphor for sex. It's pretty obvious that the deed is done once the curtains drop on the scene.

It's a metaphor for sex. It's the musical's equivalent of the sex they have in the book which is more graphic.
As many others have said, I believe that this song is a representation of some kind of sex between Elphaba and Fiyero, thouth it is also a greater pledge of their love to each other. The end of the song marks a change in attitude in Elphaba - her love for Fiyero and his love for her has made her more sure of who she is.
