To Be Myself Completely Lyrics
I absolutely love this song. I've been a B&S fan for a couple years now, and this is one of my favorites. I think it's funny that everyone is saying they don't necessarily like Stevie's voice, and appreciate the song more when Stuart comes in, because I feel the exact opposite! I love Stuart's voice, but I think this song is a nice, refreshing break. The piano line is great as well.
Love this song A LOT. Gotta ask - does anyone else think 'And the ladies say, "hey, baby, you've earned it!"' is a reference to 'You Just Haven't Earned It Yet, Baby' by The Smiths? It would be odd, though, 'cause I was under the impression that Stevie didn't like them. Maybe Stuart helped out with the lyrics and slipped it in... Anyway, since I know what a huge fan Stuart is, I just assume it is a reference to them. Which is cool!
this is a great song. i just started B&S, and this is one of my favs.
I love Belle and Sebastian, and I love The Life Pursuit, but I really can't stand this song. The music itself is so simple and monotonous, and his voice just doesn't flow as beautifully in this song as it does in the others on the album. Here, it's almost unbearable for me. And the lyrics, I find rather dull. Just my opinion, but it doesn't seem to fit on TLP.
btw words&tricks, this song is sung by a different band member, but you can hear stuart singing in the background every now and then, like when he sings
"I'm not so sure, i toured the land/ You could call it work if you count the band"
i love this song, its one of my favorites on the cd, i adore the piano in it, its a simple song but it really gets under my skin.
as much as i like stevie and think hes a great songwriter, love love love when stuart comes in with the harmonies (you could CALL it work if you could COUNT the band) and totally blows him away vocally

i heard it and 'whoa what happened to Stuart?' then he comes in the background haha
the song has a bittersweet tune to it. i think the song has something to do with losing intimacy in a relationship because of the musicians lifestyle, i.e. touring, band. Thats my take on it. i dont really care what its about although i enjoy the way the keys are played on the piano...
Right. He's a musician, he travels a lot, he cannot commit to a relationship. In order to "be himself" he must say goodbye, let her down, end the relationship.
