Translation

A word does not say anything
And at the same time it hides everything
Just as the wind that hides the water
Like the flowers that mud hides.

A glance does not say anything
And at the same time it says everything
Like rain on your face
Or an old treasure map

A truth does not say anything
And at the same time it hides everything
Like a bonfire that does not go out
Like a stone that is born dust.

If one day you need me, I will be nothing
And at the same time I will be everything
Because in your eyes are my wings
And the shore where I drown,
Because in your eyes are my wings
And the shore where I drown

The beauty of the Spanish language is that there is so much more depth and weight and meaning than what can be literally translated. In most, if not all languages there is a loss in translation. For instance in the beginning of this song:

Una Palabra One word no dice nada doesn't say anything - or also doesn't say much or hold much weight by itself y al mismo tiempo lo esconde todo,(and at the same time it hides all) all the while hiding all the truth and meaning of what any one particular word can mean in itself

Igual que el viento que esconde el agua Like the winds which hide the rains or in the more literal translation like the winds hide the waters which can only be done by wind and water interacting as rains.

Como las flores que esconde el lodo Like the flowers which hide the mud. Basically beauty on the surface and the dirty grimy muddy under layer which one can only see when one gets up close and personal and breaks through the surface.

So you have this interesting play of words of something which is nothing is hiding everything in the form of a word and what immediately popped into my head was hate as an example, but love can also be used as words that have very significant meanings and when used alone don't mean much, but when used in a context of what does love or hate mean there aren't enough words to describe the range of emotions they can stir up, thereby hiding the significance of a word.

Una Mirada (A glance, or a look) Glance would be more appropriate for this song no dice nada (says no thing) another play on the words being that a look can't say anything y al mismo tiempo lo dice todo (but at the same time says it all), we can also apply the same types of examples to a dirty look or a smile which on the surface can say a lot but without knowing the person we are looking at or is looking at us not much information can be gained to know what is going on under the surface.

As in the movie a hopeless life can be of value if it is used right and in the end traded away for a young life full of potential.

@skinnyblack39 I think this is the best interpretation I've encountered

I first heard this song in "Man on Fire" and fell inlove with it. It's one of thé most beautiful songs I have ever heard. I posted a translation for those of you who doesnt understand spanish.

Also herd this song from Man on Fire. great song, aswel as the film. Not entirely sure what it means - alot of comparison going on. Maybe there's some irony in there:

A glance does not say anything And at the same time it says everything

Quality song nevertheless :-)

"If one day you need me, I will be nothing"

The translation doesn't quite go like this. It's more like "If one day I don't have you, I will be nothing"
