Flying a Kite Lyrics
Dear charming kite,
Do litely bite
The foggy fields, the lowing lanes
The rickety roads and the kneeling plains
Oh lazy light
With massive might
You dare my dream of snowy cloth
Felt snapping white as albatross
Is bitten by the wind and rocks
Is hushed into the clary moss
Is ushered here to count his loss
My kite; pale cotton, willow cross
You take my tattered fist
It's like a catalyst
It's like a roiling writhing wall of 'has it come to this?'
If this is medicine woah-oh
It tastes like medicine
Just help me get it in
Flying a kite,
Flying a
Kite, flying
A kite, flying
A kite, flying
A kite, flying
A kite, flying
A kite, flying
Flying a kite
Oh-woah-oh
Oh gnarly night
It's like a dog fight
It's like a cat fight
And if i could just hold you close to me, woah-oh
I guess i hold you close to me
It's like a bull fight
And i see i give you a piece of my mind
But i'm giving you a piece of my mouth
You blushing boy,s how could you be so blind?
Flying a kite,
Flying a
Kite, flying
A kite, flying
A kite, flying
A kite, flying
A kite, flying
A kite, flying
Flying a kite
Oh-woah-oh
La, da-da, dee, di
Look at my kite fly
Over foggy fields
The pungent pines
The verdant vales
The vapid vines
And the thousand purple cups of wine
The tearing teeth and the four full tines
The crumpling feast and the dawdling dine
And you do
Get me off the floor
Stand there staring for a minute
Like you never saw a girl before
There is the door
And like the streets are like an open mouth
I head south
And you stand fair and square and i stand there
Until the fall blots me out
There is no more
The cat and mouse to block the door
There is no more
Do litely bite
The foggy fields, the lowing lanes
The rickety roads and the kneeling plains
Oh lazy light
With massive might
Felt snapping white as albatross
Is bitten by the wind and rocks

Feels like kite-flying's being intercut.
I think it means that she is flying a kite.
Drugs. Common, ever hear the expression "high and a kite"? And also, there are some other references, like "the foggy fields", and
"If this is medicine woah-oh It tastes like medicine Just help me get it in"
seems to refer to shooting up. Some other things like "Is bitten by the wind and rocks" and "like the streets are like an open mouth" seem to indicate that the person doing the drugs is out on the streets, i.e. homeless.
Also, this is kinda out there, but
"And i see i give you a piece of my mind But i'm giving you a piece of my mouth You blushing boy,s how could you be so blind?"
Call me a perv but might this mean giving head for drugs?

honestly, this is one of my favorite songs by joanna.
I completely disagree with Apfelstrudel.
Yes I think the songs about loss of innocence, but I really don't think its about giving head for drugs (and yes I realize you were talking about only a portion of the song). Being an avid kite flyer that I am at the ripe age of 21, I really feel that when you fly a kite, you have a sense of innocence. For me, it reminds me of being a kid; a sense of nostalgia and longing for a past that was simple, and that the present is too complicated for it to even partially exist. Sure, drugs may play a part for some people (though I think she's specifically talking about alcohol through most of the song), but sex, love, jobs, school, etc. also takes this away from us. We all have a moment in our lives where we realize our mortality and our age. As I said, I'm 21 and I realize that I'm young. However, I'll never be 5 again, or 7, or 10 again. We can never relive those years; we get one shot to live some of the most precious years of our lives before we can even grasp the concept that those moments will never exist again. The kite, in this song, represents this.
"If this is medicine woah-oh It tastes like medicine Just help me get it in"
God do I know how that feels. How do you take in a life that is bittersweet? Its no longer the dreams of being in the circus, playing house, and receiving a good night kiss. Sure, other dreams form, you live your life in a way to hopefully achieve success or happiness, however, there will be those nights where life doesn't taste so sweet.
I think one of the hardest things that makes you realize this revelation of adulthood, is also found within romantic relationships. This is usually when we taste life at its most sweet as an adult, and at the same time, its most bitter. We spend years giving ourselves to another person, hoping that they will help us understand an aspect of life that individually we can not fully comprehend on our own. Sometimes, people give to little, other times people give to much. However, when the other person leaves, we are left to contemplate what happened, often wondering "what went wrong?". I think this is often, when we realize how little innocence there actually is left within our lives. We realize things are much more complex than they are simple.
what a lovely analysis XmisfitXgirlX, and a brilliant song!
OK, I'm going to delve deep into protentiousness now. But I think she is alluding to Milton's poem/masque, which is about the loss of innocense/chastity. In the poem a girl gets lost in the forest and is tempted by the spirit Comus to drink a cup of wine (symbolising sex etc...) - but she refuses at the last minute.
Milton: "Deep skill'd in all his mothers witcheries, And here to every thirsty wanderer, By sly enticement gives his banefull cup, With many murmurs mixt, whose pleasing poison The visage quite transforms of him that drinks, And the inglorious likenes of a beast."
Joanna: "The pungent pines The verdant veils The vapid vines And the thousand purple cups of wine The tearing teeth and the four full tines The crumpling feast and the dawdling dine."
Just a thought...
*Sorry, missed out the name of the poem, its called Comus.
I completely disagree with any interpretation that this song is about drugs. I could see it maybe being about unrequited love or a general loss of innocence, but I think saying this is about drugs is misinterpreting it and inserting things into it that aren't there.
